FORT WORTH, Texas - The No. 35 TCU women's tennis team opened Big 12 action at home by upending No. 30 Kansas, 4-1, for the team's eighth straight win of the season and second consecutive upset in conference action on Friday night at the Bayard H. Friedman Tennis Center.
The Horned Frogs (10-2, 2-0 Big 12) opened action in doubles against the Jayhawks (12-4, 2-1 Big 12) with the No. 27 ranked pair of Seda Arantekin and Caroline Wegner picking up win No. 17 this season and sixth straight by topping Janet Koch and Nina Khmelnitckaia, 6-2. Olaya Garrido-Rivas closed out the point for TCU by upsetting the previously unbeaten Anastasiya Rychagova and Smith Hinton on court three, 6-3, for the duo's fifth consecutive win this season.
In singles action, Wegner easily handled Koch, 6-2, 6-1, for the junior's sixth straight win this season to put TCU up 2-0. Kansas scored its only point of the match with a win on court one, before Alexis Pereira and Aleksandra Zenovka closed out the match with wins on court six and five, respectively. Pereira downed Maria Jose Cardona, 6-3, 6-1, before Zenovka recorded her team-best 18th win of the season with a 7-5, 6-1 victory over Summer Collins.
Quotes of the Match
Head Coach Lee Taylor Walker
"This was a great win. I think honestly that both Kansas and our team were a little underrated on the year and I think rightly so. In the preseason rankings, we were not picked to be leading the conference like we are now. I think it was more of an unknown thing rather than they are not any good. Todd (Chapman) has done a great job at Kansas and they have got good wins over Baylor and Texas already. Anytime that we can beat a team that has beat Texas and Baylor, with the tradition they have, then I am happy.
"The biggest match of the day for us was Mia King and Olaya Garrido-Rivas who beat the No. 3 doubles team from Kansas that hasn't lost a match all year long. That not only helped us win the doubles point, but I think it kind of crushed their spirit a little bit. Any time you break a record that they have going like that is nice. Awesome day and awesome victory and I am really happy about it all."
