AMES, Iowa -- TCU's big second quarter run allowed the Frogs to pull away from the Cyclones and the Horned Frogs held on to beat Iowa State 72-62 on Wednesday night in Hilton Coliseum.
Jada Butts had a season high 19 points while senior Zahna Medley had 22 points to lead the Frogs to the victory.
TCU (12-8, 4-5) won on the road for the second time in league play, matching their best mark in program history in four years as a member of the Big 12 Conference and exceeding their total number of road wins over last season with their third road win on the season.
The Frogs trailed by as many as five in the opening half when Emily Durr hit a three for the Cyclones to build a 26-21 lead with 4:50 to go in the opening half. That's when the Horned Frogs run started as they limited Iowa State to just one point the remainder of the half following that three-point field goal. The TCU defense forced the Cyclones to miss their final seven shots and nine of their last 10.
The Frogs, in turn, went on a 17-2 run to close out the half. Junior Carol Willie got the run sparked with a three-point play before Medley hit a buck and consecutive free throws to take the lead for the first time in the game at 27-26 and 28-26. Toree Thompson and Jada Butts added baskets to go up six and force an Iowa State timeout with 2:25 left in the half. TCU then answered Iowa State free throws with a three by Medley with 1:21 to go and another from Butts at the buzzer to give TCU a 10-point advantage at the break.
The Frogs converted on 4-of-5 three-point field goals before the halftime break and shot 46.9 percent in the opening 20 minutes while holding the Cyclones to just 31.1 percent shooting, including 26.3 percent in the second 10 minutes of play. TCU also held a one-rebound advantage on the boards in the first half and allowed just five second chance points. The bigger Cyclones were also held to just eight points in the paint in the opening half while TCU piled up 16 points before the break.
Iowa State (11-8, 3-5) scored the first basket of the second half on a three-point basket to cut it to seven points. The Frogs then consistently fought back any threats from the Cyclones. In the back and forth second half, the Cyclones eventually narrowed the margin to six at 65-59 with 3:07 left before AJ Alix and Willie answered with consecutive baskets.
TCU held the Cyclones to just 30.8 percent shooting for the game and limited Iowa State to just 16 points in the paint. QUOTE OF THE GAME "It is always special when you can come into Hilton Coliseum and get a win," said head coach Raegan Pebley. "We have had some hard fought losses recently and its good to come out with a win... We were able to get consistent stops in the second quarter and we got some better execution that allowed us to get on the run. We didn't settle for jump shots."
