AUSTIN, Texas - TCU dropped a hard-fought 71-54 decision to Texas Tuesday night inside the Erwin Center.
The Rundown
Going into the game, the Horned Frogs (9-11; 1-7 Big 12) were looking to sweep season series with the Longhorns, having defeated Texas, who is receiving votes in the latest USA Today Coaches Poll, earlier this month at home. In the end, TCU couldn't make enough plays in the second half.
Chris Washburn and Malique Trent led the way, scoring nine points apiece, respectively, while senior Devonta Abron tallied seven points and a team-high eight rebounds. Abron played a pivotal role off the bench Tuesday, scoring six-straight points during a stretch in the first half.
Texas (13-7; 5-3 Big 12) saw Kerwin Roach score a game-high 22 points on the night. Prince Ibeh was the only other Longhorn in double-figures, totaling 17 points and 10 rebounds.
On the night, TCU forced UT into a 3-for-15 showing from deep and 15 turnovers. The Frogs had chances to make the game interesting with 13 minutes left, cutting it to nine, but in the end couldn't get over the hump.
Brandon Parrish got the Frogs going early in the second half, draining a three ball on the opening possession and then following it up with a runner to make the scoreboard read 40-32. By the time Trent scored on a backdoor cut, TCU was in the midst of a 7-3 run to open the half and pull within 40-34.
Texas would go on a 13-4 run midway through, but Karviar Shepherd would stall the Longhorn attack at the 9:38 mark to bring TCU within 13. The Frogs would cut it to 11 at the 8-minute mark, but that was as close as the Purple and White would get the rest of the way.
The Longhorns jumped out to a 9-2 lead in the contest before JD Miller found the bottom of the net at the 15:56 mark of the opening frame. The Longhorns would push it to 17-7 a few minutes later, but Abron would have nothing of it, scoring on three-straight trips to pull the Frogs within 19-13 with 11:22 showing on the clock.
Midway through the opening frame, Miller would connect with a floater to make it a 24-18 contest with a little over 9 minutes remaining in the half, but the Longhorns would score six out of the next eight points to take a 30-20 advantage with 7:22 showing on the clock.
The two teams would go back and forth the next couple of trips until Washburn made it a 36-25 game with a three ball from the corner at the 4:09 mark. The junior would continue to go to work down the stretch, scoring another jumper to make it a 37-27 ballgame at the half.
Quote of the Night
Trent Johnson
"Our effort was pretty good for the most part. We had some guys who were in situations where they had some open shots, the ball just didn't go down for us."
