FORT WORTH, Texas - TCU shot a blistering 62.5 percent in the second half Saturday afternoon en route to a 75-63 drubbing of Tennessee inside Schollmaier Arena.
Game Recap
The Horned Frogs, who are now 3-0 all-time in the Big 12/SEC Challenge, simply dominated the second half Saturday, out-scoring the Volunteers, 48-22. For the half, the Purple and White could do no wrong, limiting UT to only 23.5 percent from the field and a 0-for-15 showing from beyond the arc.
During one stretch alone in the second stanza of action, the Frogs' relentless defense made Tennessee miss 15 of 16 shots, including 10 in a row to fall behind by 12. When it was all said and done, TCU overcame a 14-point deficit to move to 2-0 all-time over the Vols.
With the win, the Frogs, who out-rebounded UT to the tune of 46-41, improved to 10-11 overall, while Tennessee dropped to 10-11 on the season.
Sophomore Malique Trent led the way, scoring a team-high 15 points. He did all of his damage in the second half, scoring 14 of his 15 on 4-of-7 shooting from the field in the period. Chris Washburn and Brandon Parrish were also in double-figures, scoring 14 points apiece, respectively. Washburn just missed his first career double-double, tallying a team-high nine boards in the win. He also dished out a career-high five assists. Karviar Shepherd rounded out the Horned Frog notables, dropping 13 points on 6-of-10 from the floor.
Trent opened the half, scoring the first five points for TCU before Devonta Abron would find pay-dirt down low to claw the Frogs back to a 41-34 deficit. By the time Parrish tickled the twine from deep at the 17:21 mark, TCU had made it a four-point game at 45-39.
With the scoreboard reading 50-43 in slight favor of Tennessee, Parrish once again went off from deep, this time off an assist from Washburn with 14:45 on the clock. The two teams would trade possessions the next couple of minutes, but Shepherd would make it a 52-48 game midway through powering home a tough layup.
TCU would pull within two at the 9:39 mark when the junior scored a tough layup down low. The Frogs would tie it at the free throw line a few minutes later and then take the lead following four-straight from Trent with a little over 7 minutes remaining in the contest.
A dunk by Washburn ignited the crowd down the stretch and helped TCU push its lead to 62-55 with 5:47 left. The junior continued to go to work on the next possession, following up a miss to give the Purple and White its biggest lead at that time of the day at nine.
The Horned Frogs would push it to 12 and never look back, moving to 3-0 in the Big 12/SEC Challenge all-time.
TCU stormed out to a 6-2 lead early in the contest, but Tennessee would battle back to tie it at 8-8 during the opening stages of the half. The two teams would continue to go back and forth the next couple of trips until Chauncey Collins connected from deep at the 13-minute mark to give the Frogs a 16-15 advantage.
With the Volunteers clinging to a 25-18 lead midway through, Shepherd would find the bottom of the net to inch the Frogs closer. A couple of trips later, JD Miller would flush home a dunk and TCU pulled within five at 27-22 with 5:50 showing on the clock.
Tennessee would expand it to 38-25 down the stretch before Abron scored down low to cut into the deficit. UT would take a 41-27 lead into the break.
Quotes of the Game
Chris Washburn
"To close this one out, being down 14 going into the second half, does a lot for us. The win means a lot overall and just shows us what we're capable of when we play together as a team."
Brandon Parrish
"The second half just shows, if we're ever doubting ourselves, we have this game to think back on. A game like this gives us an opportunity to bounce back and boosts our confidence. I think its going to help us out a lot."
Trent Johnson
"We showed some courage, and we kept our poise. We had every opportunity to fold our tents. But the guys kept fighting a little bit, and we made some plays, made some shots. It was nice to see the guys shoot the ball with confidence and the ball go down for them. It's a good win for us. Any win's a good win for us."
