FORT WORTH, Texas - TCU had three players score in double-figures Saturday afternoon, but dropped a 73-60 decision to No. 19 Iowa State inside Schollmaier Arena.
The Rundown
The Horned Frogs, who moved to 9-10 overall and 1-6 in Big 12 play, trailed by nine at halftime Saturday, but couldn't cut into the lead in the second half. Coming into the game, TCU had won four out of its last seven conference home match-ups.
Chauncey Collins led the Frogs Saturday with a team-high 14 points on 5-of-13 from the floor. The sophomore has now scored in double-figures in eight out of the last nine games. Vladimir Brodziansky followed with 12 points on 5-of-9 from the field, while junior Chris Washburn chipped in with 10 points and six rebounds.
Iowa State (15-4; 4-3 Big 12) was carried by Monte Morris' 18-point outing. Matt Thomas was also in double-figures with 15 points.
For the game, TCU did most of its damage off the bench, outscoring the Cyclones to the tune of 29-13. The Purple and White also battled Iowa State to a 31-31 draw in rebounds Saturday, while forcing the Cyclones into 23 turnovers.
Iowa State opened the second half jumping all over the Frogs, but TCU continued to fight as Collins dropped a deep three to make it a 52-37 game 4 minutes into the half. Michael Williams then went to work a few plays later off a dish from Malique Trent and the Frogs were able to close the gap at 52-39 midway through.
With Iowa State leading 54-41, Washburn made it an 11-point game, scoring inside the paint. The Cyclones would add to their lead though until Brodziansky hit back-to-back free throws to stymie the run. A dunk by the sophomore a few plays later seemed to ignite the crowd and pulled the Frogs closer.
TCU would make it a 10-point game in the closing minutes as Collins tickled the twine from deep with 2:15 left, but the Frogs couldn't make it single-digits the rest of the way.
TCU jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the contest thanks to Washburn, but Iowa State connected on an old fashioned three-point play on the other end to pull within one. A few plays later Collins would rip the nets from deep to give the Purple and White a 7-5 advantage 4 minutes into the contest.
By the time Williams found himself wide open for a three at the 15:07 mark, TCU had built a 10-7 advantage. The two teams would go back and forth the next couple of trips and the Frogs would take a 15-9 lead off a three-point play by Devonta Abron midway through.
With the Cyclones clinging to a 26-19 advantage down the stretch off a 17-4 run, JD Miller would put an end to the run, scoring at the 3:09 mark down low. The freshman continued his offensive production a few moments later, pulling the Frogs within 31-25 late in the opening frame.
A late jumper by Collins made it a 37-28 ballgame at the half in slight favor of the Cyclones.
Quotes of the Game
Trent Johnson
"I want to tip my hat to Iowa State, but obviously we're our own achilles' heel right now in terms of crucial situations and crucial games. We need to get better and finish a half. We just have to keep playing and worry about the next play as opposed to the play that happened before."
Vladimir Brodziansky
"We just need to continue to get better in every part of our game. We're a really young team, so we need to keep listening to what coach says on offense and defense. It's just taking it step-by-step and continuing to get better everyday."
