FORT WORTH, Texas -- A season filled with some of the program's biggest accomplishments has come to an end, as the No. 17 TCU women's tennis team lost in the second round of the NCAA Division I Women's Tennis Championship to No. 10 Texas A&M, 4-0, on Sunday afternoon in College Station.
The Horned Frogs (19-9) could not pull off an upset over the Aggies (17-5) for the second time this season and closed out their first season under the helm of head coach Lee Taylor Walker with the most wins in the program since 2008.
"We knew we were going to play a good team," Walker said. "We were a little flat on doubles on the courts. It was a huge win for the No. 1 doubles team to get close to turning around some of those matches at 2 and 3 doubles but we just couldn't do it. Texas A&M is a great team, and I am super proud of our girls.
"There was a 15-minute stretch there in singles that we maybe could have turned it around and had a miracle come back. That was fun to get because sometimes you can play a match and not have that moment. You could be down and losing the entire time and never feel like you have a chance, and that is just not a good experience. I was proud of our girls for continuing to fight. We had a season where we didn't lose a match to any team outside of the top 18. I am proud of our girls, and the seniors played one and two all year. It is never fun to lose but at the same time I am proud of the way they fought. It has been a great experience and a great year."
A battle for the doubles point opened the match, as Texas A&M was able to get the first win on court two, before the No. 30 pair of Seda Arantekin and Stefanie Tan upset No. 13 Eva Paalma and Rachel Pierson at the No. 1 spot, 8-4. The pair notched their 18th win of the season and seventh over a ranked doubles foe.
The Aggies were too far ahead on the final court, as Texas A&M claimed the victory on court three, 8-4, to take the doubles point and the early 1-0 lead in the match.
TCU attempted to battle back in singles action, but Texas A&M was able to get straight-set victories at the bottom three positions of the lineup to complete the 4-0 victory and take the Frogs out of the running at the NCAA Championship.
The loss to the Aggies ends the season for the team, but TCU will still have representatives in the NCAA Singles and Doubles Championship on May 20-25 at the Hurd Tennis Center in Waco, Texas. Senior Simona Parajova will compete in the singles bracket, while Tan and Arantekin are first alternates for the doubles bracket.
