The Horned Frogs, who did everything right Saturday afternoon following a night in which they didn't get into Norman until after 1:00 a.m. because of the weather, just ran out of gas in the end despite leading at halftime, 36-28, after a 13-4 run to close the half.
With the loss, TCU moved to 17-12 overall and 4-12 in league play, while the Sooners improved to 20-8 overall and 11-5 in Big 12 action.
In a game that featured six ties and 12 lead changes, the Frogs stormed out of the gates Saturday, shooting 43.3 percent from the field in the opening frame, including 50 percent from behind the arc. The Frogs cooled off late in the second half though, which allowed the Sooners to climb back into the ballgame and turn a five-point deficit at the 7:44 mark into a hard fought seven-point victory.
For the game, TCU, who led for a majority of the contest, shot 41.5 percent from the field, recorded a 30-28 advantage in the paint and just edged the Sooners in points off turnovers, 13-12.
On the day, Kyan Anderson tallied 16 points on 6-of-11 from the field, including 4-for-8 from deep. Trey Zeigler followed with 16 points on 6-of-12 shooting, while also dishing out a season-high five assists. Sophomore Chris Washburn was the only other Frog in double-figures, totaling 10 points and tying Zeigler for a team-best six boards.
Oklahoma was led by Buddy Hield, who totaled 21 points and 13 rebounds. TaShawn Thomas added 15 points and Ryan Spangler and Isaiah Cousins recorded 10 points apiece, respectively.
The Sooners opened the second half on a 5-0 run to make it a 36-33 ballgame, but the Horned Frogs would respond with layups by Washburn and Zeigler to push their advantage to 42-36 with 17:20 showing on the clock.
With the scoreboard reading 42-40 in favor of TCU, Washburn went back to work, spinning around Spangler for a runner in the lane. Oklahoma would make it a three-point game a few trips later, but Brandon Parrish would nail a three-pointer from the corner to put a halt to the OU run.
Midway through the second half, Oklahoma was able to tie the game at 48-48, but like he did all day, Anderson answered with a three to regain the Frog advantage at 51-48 before Zeigler followed suit with a jumper with a little over 9 minutes remaining in the contest.
Leading 53-50, Anderson drove by a would-be defender and beat the shot clock to give TCU a 55-50 advantage at about the 7:30 mark. The two teams then traded possessions and the ballgame would be tied at 56-56 with 4 minutes left to go.
Thomas would score four-straight to give OU a four-point advantage, but a cutting Zeigler would knife through the Sooner defense on the next possession to make it a 60-58 ballgame with a little over a minute to go. The two teams would trade free throws opportunities down the stretch, but Oklahoma was able to hold on at the line
Anderson got the Frogs on the board two minutes into the contest, nailing a three ball from the corner off a dish from Zeigler. The two teams would trade buckets the next couple of possessions, but Oklahoma built a 12-8 lead before Kenrich Williams grabbed a rebound and laid it in at the 13:10 mark.
A few trips later, Fields exploded to the rim for a dunk and then watched as Anderson dropped his second triple of the game with a little over 11 minutes remaining in the half to make it a 17-14 advantage for TCU. Oklahoma responded to regain the lead at 21-19, but Williams would have nothing of it, burying a three ball of his own midway through to make it 22-21 in favor of the Purple and White.
With TCU clinging to a 27-24 lead, the Frogs went to work as Anderson torched the nets for another three, while Washburn rolled in a jumper to propel the TCU advantage to 32-24 with 3:56 showing on the clock. By the time Anderson floated in a jumper with a little over 3 minutes remaining in the period, TCU was in the midst of an 11-0 run to take a 34-24 lead.
The Frogs closed the half on a 13-4 run to take a 36-28 lead into halftime.
