PUERTO AVENTURAS, Mexico -- TCU had three players score in double-figures Wednesday night en route to a 71-60 decision over Illinois State in the third-place game of the Cancun Challenge.
The Rundown
The Horned Frogs, who led by as many as 19 Wednesday, did it on both ends of the court throughout the night, shooting a season-high 50.9 percent from the field, while limiting the Redbirds to only 36 percent, including 16.7 percent from beyond the arc.
With the win, TCU claimed third-place honors at the Cancun Challenge and improved to 3-2 on the season. Illinois State, who is coming off an NIT appearance a year ago, dropped to 2-4 on the year.
In a game that was never really in doubt, the Frogs controlled the contest from start to finish, jumping out to a 14-point lead in the first half and never looking back. When it was all said and done, TCU, who dished out 13 assists Wednesday, including a career-high of five by Chauncey Collins, led for almost 37 minutes. The Frogs did most of their damage inside the paint, recording a 38-26 advantage, while recording a slight advantage in rebounds at 34-33. TCU also connected on six three's in the game.
Individually, sophomore Malique Trent led the way with a career-high 19 points on 7-of-12 shooting. Fellow sophomore Vladimir Brodziansky was just as impressive, tallying 16 points on 8-of-12 from the field. The Slovakian native just missed his second career double-double, corralling a team and game-high nine boards. Karviar Shepherd rounded out the Horned Frog notables on the offensive end, dropping 15 points on 6-of-9 from the field. Brandon Parrish, who was named to the All-Tournament team Wednesday, totaled eight points and five boards.
TCU opened the second half in style as Collins found Brodziansky down low for the dunk. A few plays later Trent connected on a tough layup and the Frogs went up by nine at 36-27.
By the time the sophomore connected on his third three of the game, TCU had jumped on top 41-31 with 14:45 showing on the clock. JD Miller then got into the act, scoring on a tough three-point play to increase the TCU advantage to 14 midway through the second stanza of action.
With the scoreboard 45-36 in favor of the Horned Frogs, Shepherd found the bottom of the net on two-straight trips to make it 49-36. Collins then threaded the needle to Brodziansky for the dunk and TCU was once again in business.
Illinois State would cut it to 60-50 down the stretch, but Trent would have nothing of it, slicing to the hole for a bucket to stymie the Redbird attack for the time being. ISU proceeded to cut it nine before Parrish rattled home a three from the corner to give TCU a 65-53 lead with 1:54 left on the clock.
That was as close as Illinois State would get the rest of the way as the Horned Frogs captured third-place in Cancun.
