LUBBOCK, Texas - Fueled by a strong defensive effort throughout Saturday, TCU dropped Texas Tech at United Supermarkets Arena, 62-42.
With the win, the Horned Frogs moved to 14-3 overall and 1-3 in Big 12 action, while the Red Raiders dropped to 10-8 overall and 0-5 in league play. In all, the margin of victory was the largest in the all-time series since 1997.
With their stifling defense, the Frogs held the Red Raiders to fourth fewest points by an opponent on their home floor in school history. TCU hadn't held an opponent to 42 points away from Fort Worth since doing so at Texas A&M on March 4, 1958 and at Arkansas on Feb. 26, 1951.
Simply put, the Frogs overpowered Texas Tech from start to finish Saturday on both ends of the court. When it was all said and done, TCU had stifled the Red Raiders to the fifth fewest points by an opponent in a first half in school history. It was also tied for the sixth fewest of any half in program history.
For the game, TCU limited Texas Tech to only 22.9 percent from the field, including 18.8 percent from behind the arc. The Frogs, who shot 45.2 percent from the field on the day, also out-rebounded the Red Raiders to the tune of 36-31, marking the 13th time this season the Purple and White have out-rebounded their opponent.
Kyan Anderson led the way for TCU with a game-high 19 points on 5-of-11 from the field. Freshman Chauncey Collins was also in double-figures with 10 points on 2-for-4 from the floor.
Texas Tech had one player score in double-figures as Randy Onwuasor netted 10 points on 3-for-7 from the field.
Anderson got the Frogs going in the second half, draining an old-fashioned three-point play at the 18:40 mark, which made the scoreboard read 28-14 in favor of TCU. On the very next possession, Chris Washburn found pay-dirt, hitting a tough layup plus the foul to make it a 31-14 ballgame. In all, the Frogs opened the half on a 7-0 run, while not allowing the Red Raiders to score from the field until 17:40 showed on the clock in the period.
With TCU up 33-20, Collins went to work, flying through the air to draw contact and secure the basket to move the Purple and White lead to 16. Texas Tech continued to battle though, pulling within 11, but Washburn got defensive, blocking a would-be shot on one end, which led to a run-out by the sophomore on the other end to make the scoreboard read 42-27 at the 10-minute mark.
The Horned Frogs built their lead to 48-29 off a Karviar Shepherd bucket and never looked back, moving their record to 14-3 overall on the season and 1-3 in league play.
In his first career start, Kenrich Williams automatically made his presence known, draining a triple during the opening stages of the contest. A few plays later, Anderson lit up the scoreboard from deep to give TCU a 6-0 lead at the 16-minute mark. During the opening run, Texas Tech didn't score from the field until 15:28 showed on the clock.
The Red Raiders took an 8-6 lead off an 8-0 run, but Trey Zeigler exploded to the hole and threw down a thunderous dunk to tie the ballgame at 8-8 at the about the 10-minute mark of the first half.
The two teams would go back and forth the next couple of trips until Collins buried a three-ball from the right side of the court to make it a 14-10 Frog lead with 7:28 left to go in the period.
TCU was in the midst of an 8-1 run when Anderson found the bottom of the net at the 4:30 mark of the period, which made the scoreboard read 20-11 in favor of the Purple and White.
A late tear drop off the glass by Anderson allowed the Frogs to go into the break with a 24-14 lead.
TCU will next be in action Monday night against nationally ranked Texas. Start time is set for 6:00 p.m. from Wilkerson-Greines.
