FORT WORTH, Texas - Sophomore Brandon Parrish scored a career-high 22 points as TCU upended New Orleans Thursday night at Wilkerson-Greines, 86-71.
In a game where the Horned Frogs, who shot 56.6 percent from the floor, did most of their damage in the first half, Parrish led the way, going 7-for-11 from the field, including 2-for-3 from deep. The Arlington native opened the game, scoring the first nine points. Three other players scored in double-figures for the Frogs, who dished out 19 assists in the contest.
During the first half alone, TCU built a 21-point halftime lead and shot a perfect 5-for-5 from behind the arc, while shooting a blistering 67.9 percent from the field. The 54 first half points were the most in a single-half since the Frogs recorded 57 in the second half against Austin College in 2011.
Sophomore Chris Washburn followed Parrish's lead, scoring a season and career-high 14 points on 5-of-9 from the field, while also matching a career-high in rebounds with a team-high eight on the night. Finally, Karviar Shepherd and Kenrich Williams added 12 and 10 points apiece, respectively.
UNO was carried by Kevin Brown's 21-point outing. Terrance Syon was also in double-figures for the Privateers with 15 points.
With the win, TCU moved to 3-0 on the young season, while New Orleans dropped to 1-1. By scoring over 80 points Thursday, the Purple and White posted back-to-back games of 80 points for the first time since March of 2012.
The two teams would open the second half back and forth with TCU clinging to a 56-38 lead until Kyan Anderson dished a no-look pass to Parrish down low for a bucket to make it 58-40 at the 17:23 mark of the second half.
A few minutes later, Christian Gore got into the act from deep, dropping a trey ball, which pushed the TCU advantage to 19 at 63-44. The Frogs were able to increase their lead to 23 at the 13:55 mark, but New Orleans tried to chip away at the TCU lead. Anderson would have nothing of it, faking one way and driving by his defender for an old fashion three-point play midway through, which made the scoreboard read 72-48 in favor of the Purple and White.
UNO cut the TCU lead down to 13 in the closing minute, but it was too little too late as the Frogs improved to 3-0 on the young season.
Parrish opened the game on fire, connecting on the first nine points, which included a triple from the corner, to give TCU an early 9-3 lead. The two teams would go back and forth the next couple of trips, but Washburn would clean up the glass at the 16:18 mark to give the Frogs a 12-6 advantage.
With the scoreboard reading 12-9 midway through the opening frame of play, Hudson Price got into the action, drilling a triple to increase the Frog lead with a little over 14 minutes remaining in the first period. On the very next possession, the sophomore would drive by his defender and find fellow sophomore Williams who connected on an old fashioned three-point play to make it an 18-9 ballgame at the 14:10 mark.
UNO would continue to battle though, pulling within 18-15 on a mini 6-0 run. Washburn stymied the Privateer attack though, finding the bottom of the net off a deep jumper with 12:04 showing on the clock.
With scoreboard reading 24-21 in favor of the Frogs at the 10-minute mark, Anderson went to work, tickling the twine from deep to regain TCU lead at 26-21. UNO would answer on the other end on the very next possession, but Washburn was able to burry a jump hook to make it a 28-23 game at the 8:43 mark of the opening frame.
Chauncey Collins buried a triple from the right side of the court, which increased the Frog lead to 31-24 a few plays later and it appeared that the Frogs were ready to bust the game-wide open.
TCU was able to build its lead to 12 at 39-27 thanks in large part to its defense, which forced several bad shots and created some timely turnovers down the stretch. By the time Williams drove by his guy and laid it off the glass, the Purple and White had broken the game wide-open on a 17-4 run at 41-27.
A few plays later, Washburn rattled home a dunk to give the Frogs a 19-point advantage down the stretch. He then watched as Williams drilled a triple from the right side of the court, which made it a 50-31 game.
TCU took a 54-33 lead into the break, which were the most points in a period since the Frogs scored 57 in the second half against Austin College in 2011.
The Horned Frogs will next be in action Monday versus Mississippi Valley State. Start time is set for 7:00 p.m. from Wilkerson-Greines.
