FORT WORTH, Texas - TCU dominated from start to finish Monday night in routing Washington State at Wilkerson-Greines, 81-54.
The Horned Frogs, who led the entire way, moved to 2-0 on the young season by stifling the Pac-12 school on both ends of the court. Simply put, the Frogs, who led by as many as 33 in the second half, could do no wrong, forcing WSU into 17 turnovers, while shooting a blistering 50 percent from behind the arc.
When it was all said and done, TCU, who recorded a 21-9 advantage in points-off-turnovers, held Washington State to its lowest output in series history, which dates back to 2002. WSU was able to cut the 19-point halftime deficit to 14 in the second half, but the Purple and White outscored the Cougars the rest of the way, 32-19, to blow the game wide-open.
Senior Kyan Anderson led the way for the Frogs, scoring a game-high 16 points on 6-for-10 from the field, including 3-for-5 from deep. The senior also dished out six assists in only 23 minutes of action. Freshman Chauncey Collins followed, recording a career-high 10 points, while sophomore Kenrich Williams added nine points and a team-high 10 boards.
Washington State (0-2) saw Josh Hawkinson score 14 points on 6-for-15 from the field. Hawkinson also added 13 rebounds in the loss. DaVonte' Lacy was the only other Cougar in double-figures, scoring 11 points on a dismal 3-for-10 outing from the field.
Chris Washburn got the Frogs going early in the second stanza, scoring on an up-and-under to make it 48-28 in the period. The sophomore opened the half, accounting for six out of TCU's first eight points before Anderson scored five-straight, which included a bucket where he crossed over his defender by faking a pass one way and then proceeded to lay it off the backboard.
TCU had jumped on top 60-37 midway through the second half before Collins tickled the twine from deep at the 13-minute mark to increase the Frog lead to 63-37. Another triple, this time by Christian Gore, continued the Purple and White onslaught as the Frogs led by 27 midway through.
The Horned Frogs were able to push their lead to 30 a few plays later and never look back, cruising comfortably the rest of the way to move to 3-1 all-time against Washington State.
Anderson got the Frogs going right out of the gates Monday, stealing the rock on the opening possession and going coast-to-coast to connect on a three-point play. A few plays later, Trey Zeigler got into the act, scoring on a backdoor dish from Karviar Shepherd to make it 7-0 early in the contest.
By the time Washburn drove by his defender and found the bottom of the net at the 16:54 mark, TCU had jumped on top 11-0. Anderson then proceeded to tickle the twine from deep and the Horned Frogs were off and rolling, now up 14-0. During the run, WSU didn't score from the field until 15:51 showed in the opening period.
Thanks in large part to some crisp offensive production and solid defense, the Purple and White lit up the scoreboard early on in the contest, jumping all the way out to a 20-4 advantage midway through.
Washington State continued to battle though, pulling within 21-14 on a 10-1 run, but Williams would have nothing of it, scoring four-straight to make it a 26-15 ballgame at the 8-minute mark of the opening frame of play.
A nasty tip-dunk by Shepherd about a minute later gave the Frogs a 13-point advantage down the stretch. Fellow sophomore Brandon Parrish then followed suit, finding the bottom of the net from deep to make it 31-15 with 6:20 showing on the clock. In all, the Frogs went on a 10-1 run of their own once WSU had climbed within seven at the 9:42 mark of the first half.
The two teams would go back and forth the next couple of trips with the Purple and White holding a 15-point advantage when Anderson beautifully threaded the needle and found Williams underneath to make it 37-20. The sophomore then proceeded to rattle home a dunk on the very next possession to give the Frogs' a 39-20 advantage down the stretch.
Back-to-back triples by Anderson and Gore made it a 45-26 game at the break.
TCU will next be in action Thursday when it hosts New Orleans, beginning at 7:00 p.m. CT.
