BOISE, Idaho - The TCU women's soccer team took the lead early Friday, but dropped a tough Mountain West Conference battle to Boise State Friday, 2-1.
The Frogs (7-9-1, 1-4 MW) came out of the gates striking, unloading three shots in the firs six minutes. Senior forward Jordan Calhoun had his first attempt sail wide left, while redshirt freshman Brooke Kviz unloaded on goal, but dismissed by the Broncos' goalkeeper.
TCU jumped on the board with the third attempt, boasting a 1-0 lead on a 30-yard strike from Calhoun in the sixth minute. The Norman, Okla., product tallied her sixth goal of the season on an assist from Kviz.
Freshman Tori Hale fired off her first shot of the evening in the 30th minute, but her strike was blocked away. TCU had a chance to capitalize on a pair of corner kicks late in the period, but both attempts came away without a threat on goal.
At the beginning of the second period, Calhoun had another brilliant chance to score, driving the ball into Boise State territory. The senior blasted a shot wide left, but she was fouled in the process, just outside the box. Senior Katie Taylor had a golden chance to score on the free kick, but her strike was knocked down by a wall of Broncos.
Later in the half, Hale sent the ball into the box from the right side with two Frogs converging on the net, but BSU's goalkeeper knocked the ball away and TCU couldn't make anything on the rebound.
With nearly 15 minutes remaining the in match, the Frogs had to start putting more pressure on offense. Senior Alex Mechalske issued a short pass on a corner kick to line Calhoun up inside the Bronco box, but her strike was blocked wide left. Inside the 10-minute mark, freshman Natalie Werner got a cross at the top of the box, but her shot was also knocked away by a BSU defender.
TCU will conclude the 2011 regular season on the road at New Mexico on Oct. 28.
