LAS VEGAS, Nev. - The No. 73 TCU women's tennis team fell in a tough road match Saturday, dropping a 4-3 decision to Mountain West Conference foe No. 35 UNLV at the Fertitta Tennis Complex. The Horned Frogs picked up three points after the match had been clinched.
"It was another close one today," TCU head coach Jefferson Hammond said. "We are right there. The great thing is that everyone has a super attitude and they are going after it. Having the proper attitude going forward will mean a lot as we finish conference play next weekend and head into the tournament."
UNLV quickly stole the doubles point by earning wins on the top two courts. TCU's tandem of Idunn Hertzberg and Gaby Mastromarino ended the doubles portion with an 8-4 win over the Rebels' No. 3 squad of Nives Pavlovic and Adrienn Hidvegi in hopes giving the Purple and White some momentum heading into singles action.
From the No. 4 position, Hidvegi jumped out of the gate with an immediate win for UNLV, defeating Hertzberg in straight sets, 6-2, 6-2. Anna Maskaljun moved the Rebel lead to 3-0, taking down TCU junior Maria Babanova from the fifth flight, 6-1, 6-3, while No. 111 Jana Albers clinched the conference win for UNLV by upending No. 90 Kayla Duncan, 6-3, 6-2 from the No. 2 court.
The bulk of the Frogs' success came after the match was clinched, as Mastromarino earned her fifth-consecutive win from the No. 6 position, defeating Rumyana Terzieva, 6-2, 6-4. Junior Katariina Tuohimaa also continued her strong play against the MWC, earning her fifth-straight victory against the league with a 6-3, 7-5 decision over Pavlovic.
Senior Nina Munch-Soegaard ended the evening on a high note, dismantling No. 37 Kristina Nedeltcheva from the top court, 7-6 (6), 7-5. The 2009 All-American picked up her tenth victory of the spring and third against a top-40 opponent. Munch-Soegaard also claimed her 91st career singles win to move into sole possession of sixth place all-time in TCU history. The Amarillo, Texas native is now five victories shy of matching Teresa Dobson for the fifth-most singles wins as a Frog.
TCU (6-14, 3-2 MWC) will now prepare for the final weekend of the regular season, taking on BYU, New Mexico and Utah in Albuquerque, N.M., April 17-18.
