FORT WORTH, Texas - The No. 24 Horned Frog women's tennis team dropped its home opener against No. 14 Stanford by the score of 6-1 indoors at the Bayard H. Friedman Tennis Center Friday. TCU falls to 1-2 for the year, while the Cardinal advance to 3-0.
"We played a very focused team today and we played pretty well," TCU head coach Jefferson Hammond said. "I was incredibly impressed with Stanford, but we held our own. I don't think we were at the same level that we have been at in the last couple of matches, but its tough to sustain that type of play in every match."
"Hopefully we can just have a great week of practice to get ready for our next match against SMU on Feb. 17."
Stanford stormed through the doubles portion of the match, sweeping the Frogs on all three courts. After TCU dropped its first match on the middle court, Stanford's team of Hilary Barte and Lindsay Burdette, the second-ranked tandem in the nation, clinched the doubles point with an 8-2 decision over the Frogs' top squad of sophomore Kayla Duncan and senior Nina Munch-Soegaard.
The Cardinal kept rolling to start singles play, as No. 78 Carolyn McVeigh toppled TCU's Maria Babanova on the No. 5 court, 6-1, 6-0, and Duncan dropped her match to Lindsay Burdette on the No. 2 position, 6-1, 6-1. With a 3-0 advantage in the match, Stanford needed one more win to clinch victory and No. 18 Barte would capture that win for the Cardinal, upending Munch-Soegaard from the top spot, 7-5, 6-2.
With the match in hand, the Frogs kept fighting hard in the remaining singles matches. Junior Katariina Tuohimaa picked up the highest-ranked win of her career for the second time this season, battling back to take down No. 16 Mallory Burdette, 5-7, 7-6 (4), 10-5. The Helsinki, Finland native opened the 2010 season with a three-set win over No. 32 Chelsea Preeg from Vanderbilt.
"It was a nice win for Katariina," Hammond said. "I'm so happy for her that she is feeling much healthier than she did at this point last season. It allows her to really play at the level that she is capable of. Great win."
Junior Idunn Hertzberg had her opportunities to remain undefeated for the young season, but lost late leads in the second and third sets to fall to Stacey Tan, 3-6, 7-5, 7-6 (5).
TCU will enjoy a 12-day layoff before returning to the Bayard H. Friedman Tennis Center to host SMU in a cross-town night match. First serve is set for 6 p.m.
