ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. - The No. 27 TCU women's tennis team won their sixth consecutive match Friday with a 7-0 defeat of Colorado State indoors at the Randy Briggs Tennis Bubble. The Horned Frogs improved to 13-9 overall and concluded the Mountain West Conference schedule with a 7-1 record against the league.
"This week was a great example of the focus, concentration and effort that this team has put in this season," TCU head coach Jefferson Hammond said. "Everyone came out and gave their best and we ended up with great results. This is a very special team on and off the court. They have a great chemistry, and to me, that is the most important thing as we head into tournament play."
Senior Anna Sydorska and sophomore Katariina Tuohimaa got the match going in TCU's direction with an 8-4 win over CSU's tandem of Laura Neal and Lauren Strasburger. With the victory, Sydorska ties former All-American Rene Simpson for the second-most career doubles wins in TCU history with 99 victories.
"I'm excited for Anna to have matched Rene Simpson on the career doubles list," Hammond said. "Anytime you can be mentioned with Rene for any record or accomplishment, it is a real honor."
Freshman Kayla Duncan and sophomore Idunn Hertzberg clinched the doubles point for the Frogs, taking down the Rams' Tori Arenson and Caitlin Fluegge by the score of 8-3. Sophomore Maria Babanova and newcomer Gaby Mastromarino completed the doubles sweep with an 8-3 victory over Greet Satherlie and Kirsten Stople.
Sophomore Idunn Hertzberg handed TCU a 2-1 advantage after defeating Arneson from the No. 3 slot, 6-0, 6-2. Hertzberg is now 2-0 from that spot in the lineup and 13-5 after taking 10 of her last 11 matches.
Duncan followed with her 6-0, 6-2 win over Strasburger. The Winston-Salem, N.C., native finished the conference schedule as the only TCU player with a perfect 8-0 singles record.
Mastromarino clinched the match for TCU for the second-straight match with a 6-0, 6-2 rout of Stople at the No. 5 position. Sydorska followed with her fifth conscutive victory, dominating Satherlie, 6-2, 6-0.
"After dropping our match against UNLV, we knew we had to rebound and play well and that's exactly what we did in our last six matches," Mastromarino said. "It's nice to have played in Albuequerque before we come back for the MWC Championships because we have confidence playing here."
Babanova tacked on her third win of the weekend, toppling Fluegge in straight sets, 6-3, 6-1. Tuohimaa wrapped up the night for TCU be handing Neal a 6-1, 7-6 (3) defeat. Tuohimaa and Hertzberg both ended the MWC slate with 7-1 singles records.
The Frogs will return to the Bayard H. Friedman Tennis Center to end the regular season against No. 3 Baylor at 5 p.m. on April 17.
