LARAMIE, Wyo. -- The TCU Lady Frogs (6-6, 0-1) opened Mountain West Conference play with a 68-67 loss to the Wyoming Cowgirls (11-2, 1-1) Saturday at Arena Auditorium in Laramie, Wyo.
Adrianne Ross scored the first two baskets of the game to put TCU up early 4-0, but the Cowgirls responded with an 11-0 run. The Lady Frogs came back with the help of Lorie Butler-Rayford's 10 first-half points off the bench.
TCU was able to go up by as many as 10 in the first half, 34-24, with under five minutes to play, but the Cowgirls' hot three-point shooting kept them in it, as they hit 7-of-12 in the first period. The Lady Frogs led 38-35 at the break.
The Purple and White was able to extend its lead to 11 in the second half, 48-37, with four and a half minutes gone following a Ross three and a breakaway steal and layup by Natasha Lacy. TCU led by as many as 13 with 11:22 to go.
Wyoming would respond despite trailing 67-55 with 5:06 to play. Jodi Bolerjack led the charge with seven points during a 13-0 run to end the game.
Megan McGuffey had a chance to put the Cowgirls up with two shots at the free-throw line with 20.2 seconds on the clock but missed both. Wyoming came away with the rebound, was fouled with 18.2 seconds left, and Hanna Zavecz nailed both attempts at the line to put Wyoming ahead.
Ross was able to get a shot away from the left baseline after driving to the basket with under 10 ticks remaining, but her shot was off the mark, and although TCU came away with the loose ball, it was unable to get another attempt.
Ross finished as the high scorer for TCU with 18 points, followed by Butler-Rayford with 14 and Lacy with 11. Bolerjack led all scorers with 22 and Zavecz added 16.
Rebounding was a key difference in the contest, as Wyoming won the battle 38-33 and 20-14 on the offensive glass. Second-half foul trouble hurt TCU as well, allowing the Cowgirls to attempt 23 free throws to TCU's 10.
TCU returns home for its next MWC game Wednesday at 7 p.m. CST versus No. 21/20 New Mexico.
