Each of TCU's 13 players score in 86-55 drubbing
HUNTSVILLE, Texas (Dec. 19.)- The TCU Horned Frogs cruised to an 86-55 road victory over the Sam Houston State Bearkats on Tuesday night as all 13 Frogs scored and 12 players had at least one assist. With the rout, TCU improved to 6-2 on the season while Sam Houston fell to 1-5.
The Frogs continued their torrid shooting pace, nailing 11 of 22 three-pointers in the ballgame. Overall, the team was 35-of-67 from the field, good for a 52.2 shooting percentage. Equally impressive was TCU's defense, which limited its eighth straight opponent to under 40-percent shooting. The Bearkats hit just 38.6 percent (22-for-57) of their attempts from the floor.
The Frogs bench play was stellar, as the reserves totaled 44 over the team's 86 points (51.1 percent). In addition, the team doled out 33 assists, a mark that fell just four shy of the all-time WAC single-game record. The Frogs also controlled the backboards for the seventh time in eight games, by a 42-36 margin.
Guards Amy Porter and Jill Sutton each drained three treys on the night. Porter was 3-for-5 from behind the arc, while her sister went 3-for-4. The twins now have connected on 19 of their last 26 three-point attempts (.731) over the last three games. In addition to scoring, the duo teamed up for 10 assists against the Bearkats. Also in the contest, Porter moved her way past Amy Bumsted into fifth place on TCU's all-time scoring list with 952 points.
Freshman guard Ebony Shaw led the team in scoring for the first time this season, as she came off the bench for 13 points. Forward Janice Thomas, who was last week's WAC Player of the Week, recorded her second straight double-double, scoring 10 points and grabbing 11 rebounds. Thomas also blocked three shots, giving her nine rejections in the last two contests.
TCU used a strong defensive effort late in the first half to take control of the game. TCU outscored Sam Houston 20-6 over the final nine minutes of the period to gain a 17-point advantage (43-26) at halftime. The Frogs then came out of the gates quickly in the second half, putting in 19 of the first 25 points to jump on top of the 'Kats by 30 at 62-32.
TCU returns to Daniel-Meyer Coliseum to take on the Grambling State Tigers on Thursday at 7:00 p.m. The team then hosts in-state rival Texas on December 28 in a 5:30 p.m. game. The matchup is part of the Fort Worth Classic doubleheader with the Horned Frog men facing Texas Tech in the second game, which is set to begin at 8:00 p.m.
