The Horned Frogs have risen to national prominence under the guidance of Monez as TCU recorded a top-three national ranking in 15 of the last 18 seasons, including a quartet of National Championships in 2010, 2012, 2019 and 2024. Since making the NCAA Championships in 2007, the Frogs have not missed, making 18 straight appearances.
TCU has had a tremendous amount of success in the National Championships the last 18 seasons. The Horned Frogs finished second in 2015, 2016, 2021, 2022 and 2023. In addition to reaching the pinnacle in 2010, 2012, 2019 and 2024, they took home the Air Rifle National Championship in 2010, 2012, 2021, 2022 and 2024. In 2013 and 2019, the squad took home the Smallbore National Championship. They have notched two fifth-place finishes (2007 and 2009), third place finishes in 2008, 2011, 2013, 2015 and 2017 as well as a sixth-place finish in 2014. Additionally, Sarah Scherer took home the individual smallbore national championships in 2010 and 2012. In 2019, the Horned Frogs produced a pair of national champions as sophomore Elizabeth Marsh took home the smallbore title and freshman Kristen Hill outlasted teammate Angeline Henry for the program's first-ever air rifle National Championship.
Since taking over the helm of the Frogs' rifle program, TCU has become one of the most dominant programs in the country that has received national recognition. Monez has guided 29 Frogs to All-American accolades. In total, Monez has coached these 29 athletes to a combined 147 All-America honors.
Over the last nine seasons, TCU has been a force on the circuit, winning 114 of 128 matches. In 2015-16, TCU won 13 of 15 matches en route to a 2nd place finish. The 2016-17 squad sailed through the regular season undefeated. They ultimately won 14 of 15 matches. In 2017-18, the group finished first in 12 of 14 matches. A similar feat was accomplished in 2018-19 as the Frogs took the top spot in 13 of 15 matches. The 2019-20 season saw the Frogs win 13 of 14 matches. In a unique season due to COVID, TCU won all 11 matches in the spring of 2021 en route to a 2nd place finish at the National Championships. In 2021-22, the Horned Frogs finished first in 10 of 14 matches. The 2022-23 campaign saw victories in 14 of 15 matches. The Horned Frogs were victorious in 14 of 15 matches in 2023-24.
TCU returned to the top of the pack with an incredible finish at the 2024 National Championships. The Frogs were within striking distance, sitting in second after smallbore, just six points behind the host institution West Virginia. The Frogs put on a show in air rifle with four of the top eight scores to take home the National Championship. Three Frogs earned five All-America honors while Katie Zaun was named the 2024 CRCA Rifle Athlete of the Year.
The Horned Frogs finished as the National Runner-Up for three straight seasons after returning to action from the pandemic, TCU went 11-0 in 2020-21 and took home the Air Rifle National Championship. Four Horned Frogs earned a combined 10 All-America honors. The Frogs followed a similar trajectory in 2021-22, posting wins in 10 of 14 matches. They took home their second straight Air Rifle National Championship. Four Frogs combined for nine All-America honors.
TCU's hopes of defending its title in 2020 were dashed by the onset of the COVID-19 global pandemic. The Horned Frogs had won 13 of 14 matches during the season and were a favorite heading into the championships. Six Horned Frogs garnered 13 All-American accolades. Stephanie Grundsoee and Hemphill were tabbed unanimous first-team All-Americans.
A pair of freshman were the perfect compliment to three returners as the 2018-19 squad battled their way to its third National Championship. Ten-time All-American Rachel Garner rounded out her impressive career. The quintet of Garner, Marsh, Hemphill, Henry and Casey Lutz earned a combined 13 All-America honors at the end of the season.
Monez bid farewell to another successful duo at the end of the 2017-18 season. Mindy Miles, only the second athlete in NCAA history to fire a pair of perfect air rifle scores, wracked up eight All-America honors. Ariana Grabowski earned a trio of All-America honors in her time on campus.
The 2016-17 season saw the career of Sally Li, one of the most decorated shooters in program history, come to an end. She earned a school-record 11 All-America honors.
In 2012-13, Monez closed the chapter on a dominating four-year run as the senior trio of Sarah Beard, Caitlin Morrisey and Sarah Scherer wrapped up their careers with their third straight undefeated regular season. The Horned Frogs won 41 straight regular season matches dating back to the 2009-10 campaign.
The successful regular season translated to another solid showing in the National Championship match at Ohio State. The Frogs took home their first Smallbore National Title en route to a third-place finish. TCU fired a 2,347 in air rifle and combined with its smallbore score (2,317), posted an aggregate score of 4,664.
The senior class that put TCU rifle on the map had a four-year record of 48-3. In four years, they claimed two National Championships (2010 and 2012) and finished third twice (2011 and 2013).
TCU rose to the top again in 2012, riding an undefeated regular season to its second NCAA Championship in the last three seasons. In addition to being crowned the team champions, the squad took home the air rifle national championship for the second time in the last three seasons. Sarah Scherer earned her second career individual title in smallbore. All five shooters on the finals squad earned All-American honors, as TCU totaled nine selections between the two disciplines.
Another prestigious honor was realized under the direction of Monez as Sarah Scherer represented the United States at the 2012 London Olympics. She was one of two shooters to earn a spot on the air rifle team. Scherer qualified for the finals and finished seventh at the Olympic Games.
The program has received respect at the national level since Monez took over. In 2009, TCU played host to its first-ever NCAA National Championship. The success of the tournament lent itself to a second bid to host as the committee brought the championships back to Fort Worth in 2010.
TCU made the most of its hosting opportunity by taking home the team title. Additionally, the squad was crowned the air rifle National Champions, while Sarah Scherer took home the National Championship trophy in smallbore. The squad was the first-ever all-female team to win the National Championship.
At the 2009 NCAA Championships, the Frogs finished fifth overall and were the only all-female squad competing at the national competition while seven other programs were filled with a co-ed roster. Under the direction of Monez, Mattie Brogdon finished third overall in air rifle, which was at the time the highest-finish in program history, and seventh overall in smallbore.
Lorenzen and Riford became the program's first three-time All-American award winners since Sue Ann Sandusky during the 1972-74 campaigns. In addition, Lorenzen became the first shooter in program history to capture All-American accolades in both air rifle and smallbore. Lorenzen added to her accolades in 2010 as she was named the Most Outstanding Shooter of the 2010 National Championships.
The Frogs made their first national splash during the 2007 season when TCU garnered its first-ever berth at the NCAA National Championships in Fairbanks, Alaska. The Frogs finished fifth overall and were only 39 points behind the first-place winner.
The Frogs had four team members - Lorenzen, Paper, Riford and Sullivan - each earned top-25 individual honors, and Monez was selected as the NRA Distinguished College Coach of the Year.
During her tenure as head coach, Monez's shooters have filled the record books after setting high marks in air rifle and smallbore. Under her direction, the Horned Frogs have set every team and individual record in both air rifle and smallbore.
After accepting the opportunity to lead the women's rifle program on June 1, 2004, the Frogs quickly rose to national prominence. In two short seasons, Monez guided the Frogs to the NCAA Championships where they have become a staple.
A veteran of competitive shooting, Monez has participated in smallbore, air rifle, 300-meter high power, air pistol, smallbore silhouette, high power silhouette and cowboy action shooting.
The TCU Head Coach captured a gold medal at the 1979 World Championships in air rifle and regained her spot at the top in 50-meter standard rifle during the 1989 World Championships.
Monez spent 25 years in the United States military where she was a three-year member of the U.S. Army Marksmanship Unit International Rifle Section and 22 seasons as a member of the U.S. Army Reserve Shooting Team. A resident athlete at the United States Training Center, Monez has competed in both domestic and international shooting competition, including touring over 20 countries during her career.
The TCU Head Coach was a member of three gold-medal Championship of Americas Teams (1977, 1981 and 1985) and three World Championship Teams (1978, 1979 and 1982) during her impressive shooting career.
During her career, Monez captured individual medals in five World Cup competitions, including four gold crowns, to go along with eight individual titles at the U.S. International Shooting National Championships. Monez also competed at the National Rifle Championships for 20 years and recorded 15 individual titles to go along with four team championships.
Monez has recorded 55 individual crowns to go along with 42 team national records and has competed in some of the biggest events in the world, including the NRA Indoor National Championships, Silhouette Rifle National Championships and Cowboy Action Shooting National and World Championships.
Monez's most recent shooting endeavor has been in Cowboy Action shooting where she has captured titles at both the World Championships and European Championships to go along with three gold medals at the National Championships.
A member of the NRA, Monez is also affiliated with USA?Shooting, Texas State Rifle Association and Single Action Shooting Society. Monez was recognized by Shooting Sports Magazine as one of the 50 Greatest Shooters of the 20th century.
