WACO, Texas – No. 5 TCU is through to the quarterfinals of the ITA Indoor National Championships for the fifth straight season.
The Horned Frogs overpowered 17th-ranked LSU 4-1 on Friday in the opening round of college tennis' indoor grand finale at the Hawkins Indoor Tennis Center.
TCU (8-1) took a tightly contested doubles point behind a 6-3 win on court three from Filip Apltauer and Albert Pedrico. The Horned Frogs and Tigers (7-1) split the top courts. LSU briefly even the match at 1-1. Duncan Chan, Pedrico and Roger Pascual then swept their singles matches on courts one, five and six to send the Frogs into the last eight. Pedrico clinched both the doubles point and the match for TCU.
The dual was all-but-certain to end 6-1 in the Frogs' favor had the remaining matches been played out. TCU held commanding third set leads at the No. 2 and No. 3 spots.
"The guys got it done in Waco for the ITA [Indoor] National Championships here," said head coach David Roditi. "LSU had three guys from their lineup out – they've done an unbelievable job of getting all these great players – and still, it took everything we had to win that match. Really proud of our guys. Best of luck to LSU. They have a hell of a team, and when they get their people healthy, they're going to be one of the best teams in the country."
TCU now faces either No. 6 Texas or No. 8 Texas A&M at noon on Saturday in the quarterfinals.
The Horned Frogs boosted their all-time Indoor Nationals record to 22-10 with the victory. TCU has now won 15 of its last 17 matches at the sport's first of two team national championship events dating back to 2022.
Roditi boosted his career postseason record to 57-21.
TCU increased its edge over LSU in the all-time series between the programs to 17-5.
Doubles Rundown
Quickly, it became evident the doubles point was to be decided in Apltauer and Pedrico's battle with Sasa Markovic and Calin Stirbu in the third flight.
Each of the victorious pairs at the top landed an early break point and never looked back.
Fresh off a main draw run at the ATP 500 Dallas Open, Chan and Cosme Rolland De Ravel coasted to a 6-1 victory over Rudy Ceccon and Enzo Kohlman on court two. Chan and Rolland De Ravel, tabbed 22nd in the most recent ITA doubles rankings, won three consecutive games to begin and conclude the set.
LSU then got on the board on court one, as TCU's Oliver Bonding and Cooper Woestendick came up short 4-6 opposite Erik Arutiunian and Matias Ponce De Leon.
Moments before the Tigers' win on court one, Apltauer and Pedrico cashed in on a single break point opportunity ahead 4-3 and leading 40-30 on receive. Pedrico then served out the match to stake TCU to a 1-0 head start.
Chan and Rolland De Ravel remain undefeated as a pair at 12-0 and won their seventh dual doubles match.
Pedrico clinched the doubles point on court three in the opening round of Indoor Nationals for the second straight season. He and Apltauer are unblemished at 3-0 as partners.
