Second player in program history to receive the honor
FORT WORTH – TCU sophomore Lara Somfai has been placed on the preseason watch list for the Katrina McClain Award.
The Katrina McClain Award is given annually to the top power forward in women's college basketball which is presented by the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame. Somfai is one of 20 players chosen for the preseason watch list.
Somfai is the second player to receive the honor in program history. Amy Okonkwo was cited to the Katrina McClain Award preseason watch list in the 2018-19 season.
As a freshman at Stanford, she averaged 10.8 points and 9.1 rebounds per game while starting all 32 games. Somfai ranked 10th nationally among all first-year players in rebounding average. A native of Mor, Hungary, Somfai finished the season as one of two first-year players at the Power Conference level to average at least 10 points and nine rebounds a game.
She was listed on the ACC All-Freshman team and was honored as ACC Rookie of the Week a league-leading four times. Somfai recorded seven double-doubles, which were the most by an ACC freshman. She set an ACC single-game rebounding record by a freshman vs. Pitt on Feb. 5. Somfai snagged 23 boards, the second-most ever recorded by a Power Conference freshman.
Somfai is one of three Big 12 power forwards on the watch list, accompanied by Kansas' Jaliya Davis and Skylar Forbes of West Virginia.
She enters the season as the only returning starter for TCU.
Fans are encouraged to participate in fan voting on hoophallawards.com, beginning Friday, Oct. 30. The fan vote counts as one committee vote during the finalist selection process. In late February, the watch list will be narrowed to 10, followed by a final five in late March. The award winner will be revealed at the men's Final Four in Detroit.
Somfai and TCU women's basketball kick off the season at 6:30 p.m. on Nov. 3 against Oral Roberts.
