Frogs defeat Sooners 4-2 behind wild match-clincher from Maxted
FORT WORTH – Bruised and facing off with a preseason ITA top-10 team, Saturday's second round NCAA Tournament match vs. Oklahoma promised to be difficult.
Yet TCU simply would not allow itself to be beaten on the purple courts.
The No. 2-ranked Horned Frogs ousted their former Big 12 rival 4-2 on Saturday at the Bayard H. Friedman Tennis Center and advanced to Super Regional Weekend.
TCU (24-3) won all three doubles matches and secured the 1-0 head start via a simultaneous clinch on the top courts. Doubles play also featured the return of NCAA doubles champion Pedro Vives, who suited up for the first time since March 23.
But Oklahoma (21-13) refused to bow out. The teams alternated a pair of singles victories, with TCU regaining a 3-2 lead behind a 6-3, 6-7 (3), 6-2 triumph in the top spot from No. 8 Jack Pinnington over 108th-ranked Oscar Lacides.
Ultimately, the match came down to Lui Maxted's racquet.
The senior missed the Horned Frogs' opening round victory over Abilene Christian on Friday due to illness. Maxted, the ITA No. 37 singles player, faced Kholo Montsi on court two. Maxted dropped the opening frame, 6-7 (1), but rallied to even the affair at one set apiece via a 6-4 decision.
He had Montsi down and out, building a commanding 5-1 advantage in set three. But Maxted surrendered five match points while leading 5-3 and 6-5, prompting a winner-take-all tiebreaker.
The unprecedented drama overlapped with Roger Pascual's battle with Asahi Harazaki on court six. The freshman Pascual came up short in set one, 2-6, underscoring the importance of Maxted's match. Pascual reversed the score in the second set as Maxted's tiebreaker commenced to provide TCU with a lifeline.
Despite the earlier missed opportunities, it was all Maxted in the tiebreaker. He claimed three of a possible five points on receive and secured the match's final four points en route to a 7-3 tiebreaker and match-clinching victory.
With the win, TCU now hosts either No. 15 UCF or No. 29 Florida at noon on Saturday, May 10, in the Sweet 16. The Frogs have now reached Super Regional weekend for 10 consecutive seasons.
TCU extended its home winning streak to 34 matches and is one victory away from running the table in Fort Worth for the second consecutive season.
The Horned Frogs boosted their home postseason record to 28-1 and are now 58-33 all-time in NCAA Tournament play. Friday's victory also augmented head coach David Roditi's career NCAA Tournament record to 32-9
TCU has now triumphed in 14 of its last 15 duals vs. Oklahoma.
Doubles Rundown
Vives return was precisely what the doctor ordered with the Horned Frogs facing a strong Sooners doubles point.
For starters, it reintroduced the NCAA Doubles Champion tandem of the Spaniard and Maxted at the top of the lineup. The improving bill of health also slotted the No. 32 ranked pair of Pinnington and Cooper Woestendick, along with Duncan Chan and Albert Pedrico, down a court.
TCU took full advantage of playing at full strength for the first time in six weeks.
Chan and Pedrico nearly bageled Harazaki and Alejandro Malero on court three. They assumed a 5-0 lead before serving out a 6-1 decision.
Pinnington and Woestendick faced Montsi and Luis Alvarez one spot above. They fell behind 1-4 but rallied to win five straight games and earn clinching credit.
On court one, the second-ranked tandem of Maxted and Vives battered Oklahoma's top pair, No. 13 Bruno Nhavene and Lacides, 6-3. The champion pair broke the Sooners' final two service games on their way to the simultaneous clinch.
TCU has now won nine consecutive doubles points and is 23-4 on the season, including a 14-0 mark at home.
Maxted and Vives improved to 14-1 vs. ranked pairs and have lost just once since October.
Pinnington and Woestendick extending their shared winning streak to nine matches and have yet to lose outdoors.
Chan and Pedrico collected their 11th dual win.
Vives is now three wins away from reaching 100 career doubles victories.

Ultimately, it was TCU's strength at the top that made the difference.
Woestendick, No. 95 nationally, restored the Horned Frogs lead at 2-1 with a 7-5, 6-4 defeat of No. 125 Alvarez in the third position and gave TCU a sweep of the top courts.
His victory proved invaluable.
The Sooners leveled the dual at 1-all after Orel Kimhi got the better of Pedrico, 7-4, 6-3, on court four to secure the first singles point.
The topsy-turvy affair continued, as Chan was unable to capitalize on a first set victory vs. Malero at five, falling 6-3, 5-7, 3-6.
Pinnington, though, firmly put the Sooners on the heels. After failing to secure match point against Lacides in set two, the All-American took the first five games in the final frame.
The emphatic close paralleled with Maxted's bolt to a 5-1 lead vs. Montsi before the madness ensued.
Pinnington is now a robust 43-17 vs. ranked players for his career.
Woestendick moved his season record to 11-1 and extended his unbeaten run to 21 matches dating back to the Frogs' first of two collisions vs. Texas on Feb. 7 in Austin.
Maxted pocketed his team-leading 27th singles win.
