Horned Frogs fall to Wake Forest 4-2 in NCAA Championships final
WACO, Texas – TCU came two sets shy of repeating as national champions, falling to No. 1 Wake Forest 4-2 in the NCAA D1 Men's Tennis Championship final on Sunday.
Trailing 2-0, Lui Maxted and Albert Pedrico pulled the Horned Frogs within a point of the Demon Deacons with singles victories on courts three and five. Down 3-2, the match came down to a pair of third sets in the second and fourth flights. TCU was level at three games all on both courts following Maxted's 6-1, 7-6 (3) triumph over No. 123 Ioannis Xilas.
Ultimately, the comeback bid was not to be. No. 9 DK Suresh, the Demon Deacons' top-ranked player, broke vs. Pedro Vives leading four games to three en route to a 6-2, 3-6, 6-3 match-clincher.
TCU (28-4) was aiming to become just the sixth program in the sport's history to repeat as NCAA Champions. The national runner-up finish will go down as the second-best ending to a season in program history. The Horned Frogs set a single-season record for total wins and reached the NCAA semifinals for the third straight season, a feat only Texas, whom they defeated in Saturday's Final Four dual, can match. TCU will earn its third consecutive top-five final ITA team ranking come Wednesday. The Frogs will also extend their NCAA-leading streak of end-of-year top-10 rankings to 11 seasons dating back to 2015.
Maxted and Vives each earned NCAA Championships All-Tournament Team honors. Maxted got the nod at No. 3 singles. The senior duo shared the accolade in No. 1 doubles. Maxted finished 5-0 in singles play in the postseason. He and Vives put doubles victories on the board in three matches and never surrendered defeat.
Sunday's dual was the final match in the storied careers of three seniors; Maxted, Vives and Luke Swan. Collectively, the trio departs TCU as the winningest class in program history. They led TCU to a 138-16 combined overall record and four team or individual national titles across their four years in Fort Worth.
The match also marked the conclusion of junior Jack Pinnington's career. Pinnington, the 2024 NCAA Championships Most Outstanding Player, announced he will forgo his senior year and turn professional.
The loss to Wake Forest (40-1) was only TCU's second on the outdoor courts. The Horned Frogs lost a rematch for only the third time in the last two seasons. TCU fell 4-3 to the Demon Deacons in the ITA Indoor National Championships final in February.
Doubles Rundown
