Horned Frogs fell 4-0 to Ohio State in Final Four
ORLANDO, Fla. – The most successful season in the 49-year history of TCU men's tennis reached its conclusion in the semifinals of the 2023 NCAA D1 Men's Tennis Championship.
The second-seeded Horned Frogs fell to No. 3 Ohio State 4-0 at the USTA National Campus in Orlando, Florida.
TCU lost the doubles point on a 7-4 tiebreaker on court two, then was swept in singles in the first, fifth and sixth flights. The Horned Frogs were up a set on the unfinished courts.
"Couldn't get it done today," head coach David Roditi said. "Congratulations to Ohio State. They performed very well. They brought it and they did a better job than we did. Simple as that. It's painful. Hell of a year. At some point, we'll sit back and reflect. One of the best seasons – if not the best season – ever at TCU. Proud of our guys for what they were able to accomplish. A lot of guys are coming back. Hopefully we'll learn from this.
"But at the same time, so proud," Roditi continued. "So proud of our seniors – Luc Fomba and Sander Jong – leading this team again. We were right in there until the very end. We pushed some of those matches three sets. I like our chances, but we couldn't get it done. Congratulations to Ohio State and congrats to the coaches for getting their team ready. We did not. Go Frogs."
Sander Jong and Jack Pinnington struck first in doubles for TCU. Playing together for the first time since March, the duo defeated Ohio State's JJ Tracy and Cannon Kingsley 6-4 on court three. Jong and Pinnington broke at 3-3, then held on serve.
The Buckeyes earned an invaluable 1-0 cushion on the top courts. TCU's No. 2 ranked tandem of Jake Fearnley and Luc Fomba fell 3-6 to No. 21 Justin Boulais and Robert Cash. No. 16 Andrew Lutschaunig and James Trotter outlasted Sebastian Gorzny and Pedro Vives 7-6 [7-4] in the second flight to steal the doubles point. Neither team was able to break serve. TCU faulted on serve twice in the tiebreaker, which ultimately proved decisive.
Ohio State's lead widened to 2-0 behind a 6-2, 6-2 defeat of Lui Maxted at the hands of Jack Anthrop on court six. Boulais then downed Fearnley, 6-3, 6-4l in a top-25 battle out of the No. 1 post. Alexander Bernard clinched the match against Gorzny, 6-4, 64, on court five.
Fomba, No. 17 in the ITA singles rankings, battled No. 11 Kingsley on court two. He took the first set 6-4 and was on serve down 5-6 in the second frame.
Pinnington outclassed Tracy 6-2 in the opening set and was serving for the match at 5-4 in the second set. An overrule on what appeared to be match point off a slicer at the net prevented Pinnington from putting the Frogs on the scoreboard.
Jong defeated Trotter 7-6 in set one and trailed 2-3 but was on serve in the ensuing frame.
TCU finished the 2023 campaign with a 26-3 overall record and the best single season winning percentage (.897) in program history. The Horned Frogs' 26 dual victories are the most in a single season since the program won 29 duals in 1984.
Saturday's semifinal appearance marked TCU's fifth Final Four and fourth consecutive trip to the NCAA Championship.
TCU is all-but-certain to snare its ninth consecutive top-10 end-of-year ITA team ranking following the unveiling of the final set of rankings on May 24. The Horned Frogs are the only team nationwide to have finished in the top-10 of the final ITA team rankings consecutively since 2015.
