The Horned Frogs defeat No. 1 Florida, 4-3
FORT WORTH – No. 5 TCU men's tennis (2-0) defeated No. 1 Florida, 4-3, on Friday night inside the Bayard H. Friedman Tennis Center. It was the first time in program history TCU has upset the No. 1 team in the nation at home.
"This was a historical win for us," head coach David Roditi said. "Beating the No. 1 team in the country here at home for the first time. I'm so proud of our team. We've had a lot of challenges this season and for these guys to believe and come out here and get the win, it was really amazing. For Jake Fearnley to wait for two hours to get out on the court and show so much poise and maturity, he's so tough mentally and I'm really happy for him to get to clinch. Our performance at the top of the lineup was incredible. We beat Florida today because we won No. 1 and No. 2 doubles and then won No. 1 and No. 2 singles. It's just amazing. They have so many good players. We all know how well coached they are and how well disciplined they are. I'm so happy for all of us in this program that we achieved this result. The highlight of the match for me was the support we had from our fans and specifically the other student-athletes here at TCU from the Beach Volleyball team, women's tennis team and women's soccer team. This was so fun. A great day for TCU tennis. Our challenge now is to get back to work and prepare for another humongous match on Sunday against No. 4 Tennessee. I want to thank our athletic trainer Maxx Akel for working with Jake over these last four months to get him recovered from his injuries and get him ready to come out here and clinch this win for us. Go Frogs!"
TCU won the doubles point with victories at No. 1 and No. 2. In. singles play, Luc Fomba defeated 2021 singles national champion Sam Riffice in straight sets at No. 1 to put TCU in front, 2-0, before Juan Carlos Aguilar defeated No. 2 ranked Ben Shelton in a thrilling second-set tiebreaker (6-2, 7-6). Florida won the next three singles matches to tie the dual score, 3-3, before Jake Fearnley defeated No. 111 Josh Goodger with a late break (7-6, 6-4) to clinch the victory for TCU.
