TCU claims a top-five time in back-to-back years
WACO – TCU's men's and women's cross country teams opened the 2019 season at the Bear Twilight Invitational with both squads finishing fourth overall.
Sophomore Mariah Castillo crossed the finish line first for the Horned Frogs with a time of 13:48.5, placing fourth in the 4K. Evelyn Mandel came next for TCU, finishing 16th after running a 14:19.7.
This marks back-to-back years that a Horned Frog claimed a top-five time as Mandel finished fourth at the 2018 Bear Twilight.
"The women stuck to the plan, which was to start conservatively and then be aggressive on the second lap," cross country coach Jennifer Fazioli said. "Mariah did really well with that. Evelyn looked pretty strong and Izzy picked off quite a few people. I was pretty pleased with that."
Lakelin Conrad led the men, running a 19:35.1 and placing 25th in the 6K. Samuel Busa recorded a top-30 finish in his TCU debut with a 20.00.7.
"On the men's side we got a little excited," Faziloli said. "We've got a lot of young people that are racing for the first time who went out a little fast. We'll learn from it because we've got good groups working together."
Up next for the Frogs is the Ken Garland Invitational on Aug. 30 in Denton.
