The TCU women’s tennis team will open the season at home against Abilene Christian on Tuesday.
FORT WORTH, Texas – The TCU women's tennis team will kick-off the 2019 spring season on Tuesday, Jan. 15 as they welcome Abilene Christian to the Bayard H. Friedman Tennis Center in Fort Worth at 5:30 p.m.
Admission is free and fans in attendance can enjoy free pizza courtesy of Buffalo Bros., served in between doubles and singles action during the match.
TCU Notables
TCU will open the spring season at home for the fourth time in the last five years under the direction of head coach Lee Taylor Walker. The Horned Frogs return three letterwinners from a season ago and welcome five newcomers to the squad. Marie Norris will lead the team as the lone senior and she is joined by one junior, two sophomores and four freshmen.
In fall action, newcomer Mercedes Aristegui and sophomore Stevie Kennedy led the Frogs with four wins a piece with Aristegui picking up a 6-3, 6-3 win over No. 125 Anastasia Rentouli of Mississippi State for her first victory over a ranked opponent. In doubles, Kennedy and fellow sophomore Aleksa Cveticanin scored two wins during the fall tournaments to lead TCU.
Scouting the Wildcats
Abilene Christian returns five letterwinners from the 2017-18 season that posted 13 wins and played in the Southland Conference Championship. Sophomore Nini Memishishi led the Wildcats with 16 victories in singles action in 2018 while senior Autumn Crossnoe Bellow posted 11 wins. The top returning doubles pair of Crossnoe Bellow and Ileana Mocciola are also returning as the duo posted nine wins in dual matches.
All-Time Series
Tuesday's match will be the fifth meeting all-time between TCU and Abilene Christian with the Frogs holding a perfect 4-0 record in the series. The teams last competed in 2017 in Abilene with TCU coming away with the 6-0 victory. Tuesday's match will be the fourth time the teams have faced each other in Fort Worth with the last time a match took place at the Bayard H. Friedman Tennis Center coming in March of 1989.
