Kristen Hemphill shoots career-high 597 in air rifle
FORT WORTH, Texas – The No. 6 ranked TCU Rifle team handed No. 3 Alaska its first loss of the season, topping the Nanooks by a score of 4,690-4,649.
The Horned Frogs picked up their second conference win (2-0) and moved to 44-7 in home matches since the 2009-10 season. As a team, TCU posted a score of 2,322 in smallbore and 2,368 in air rifle. The Frogs remain undefeated in the air rifle discipline this season.
TCU turned in six of the top seven aggregate scores in the match. Casey Lutz led the Frogs with a solid score of 1,175 followed by Elizabeth Marsh with a 1,174. Freshmen Kristen Hemphill and Angeline Henry shot scores of 1,172 and 1,171, respectively. Rachel Garner returned to action firing an aggregate of 1,169 and Abby Gordon continued to shoot well, tying her career-high mark of 1,169. The Nanooks were paced by JT Schnering, who finished the match with the third best aggregate score (1,173).
The Frogs saw improvement in smallbore from last week. Marsh fired the top score in the match, an impressive 587. Henry turned in the fifth best mark, a 579. Lutz and Garner both followed with scores of 578, while Hemphill finished with a 575. Not factoring into the team score, Gordon placed fourth and fired a career-high score of 581.
In air rifle, TCU led the way with four of the top five performers. Lutz fired a score of 597 for the second straight week as she turned in three perfect strings of 10. Henry shot a 592, good for third place. Garner followed with a mark of 591. Rounding out the counters was Gordon with a score of 588 and Marsh with a 587.
Not factoring into the team score, Hemphill fired a career-high mark of 597 in air rifle that featured four perfect strings of 10. Rachel Kimbell also fired a season-high score of 585.
Junior Emily Haag finished with season-highs in air rifle (586) and aggregate (1,150).
Alaska shot a 2,307 in smallbore and 2,342 in air rifle (4,649 aggregate). The Nanooks were paced by Schnering and McAferty in smallbore as both posted scores of 584. Robert Scott fired Alaska's top air rifle mark with a 592.
TCU hits the road for another conference match, this time at No. 11 Ohio State on Sunday. It is slated to begin at 8 a.m. (CT).
