Nov. 14, 2016 FORT WORTH – A record day on the range saw the TCU women's rifle team establish a pair of school records. The squad fired a team score of 4,728 and a smallbore mark of 2,353 en route to another win over Air Force (4,679).
"I am excited and very proud of what this team has accomplished so far this season as they continue to set new standards for TCU Rifle," raved head coach Karen Monez. "At every match they are trying the hardest they can to be the best they can be. The record-setting individual and team scores fired today were impressive. They were not competing this weekend to make an appearance, they were competing to win."
TCU's 4,728 is the highest aggregate score recorded this season and the second-highest in NCAA history. In smallbore, the Horned Frogs matched Murray State's NCAA record score of 2,353 fired on Oct. 30.
The Frogs produced the top four marks in smallbore en route to the record-breaking performance. All five shooters turned in marks of 580 or better, while 585 was the lowest score factored into the team total. Mindy Miles beat her personal-best by two points with a 591, the fourth-highest score in the NCAA this year. Ariana Grabowski (589) and Rachel Garner (588) also established career-highs in the discipline. Casey Lutz rounded out the top four with a 585.
TCU continued its strong showing in the match with a 2,375 in air rifle. All five shooters contributed a 590 or better. Miles once again paved the path with a solid 597. She has fired a 596 or better in every match this season. Sally Li finished right behind her with a 596, matching her season-high. Lutz finished fourth with a 592, while Garner and Catherine Miller produced identical 590s.
All told, the Horned Frogs posted the top five aggregate scores in the match en route to the victory. Miles led the way with a personal-best 1,188. Garner contributed a 1,178, followed by Lutz (1,177), Grabowski and Li (1,176).
Air Force fired a 2,317 in smallbore, led by Spencer Cap's 582. Ryan Jacobs was the only other Falcon to fire in the 580s, posting a 580 to finish seventh. In air rifle, the Falcons had three shooters fire a 590 or better en route to a team score of 2,362. Cap (593) and Jacobs (592) led the way for Air Force.
Rifle (8-0) will fire its final match before the winter break on Sunday at Army.
