The Rundown
With the win, the Horned Frogs, who have now won four out of their last six Big 12 Conference home games, improved to 9-6 overall and 1-2 in Big 12 play, while the Longhorns dropped to 9-6 overall and 1-2 in league action.
In a game that came down to the final possession, TCU held strong as Washburn blocked a would be attempt by Texas' Connor Lammert with 3 seconds left and then heaved the ball down to the court to seal the victory.
Brandon Parrish led the Frogs with 15 points on 5-of-6 shooting from behind the arc. Washburn was also in double-figures, scoring a season-high 14 points on 5-of-9 from the field. The junior, who made his first start of the season Saturday, also led TCU with eight rebounds, three assists and two blocks.
For the game, the Purple and White, who have now held 35 opponents to 59 points or less under Trent Johnson, shot 42.6 percent from the field, including 41.7 percent from three. TCU also out-rebounded Texas to the tune of 40-31.
The two teams traded possessions during the early stages of the second half, which included a monster jam by Karviar Shepherd barely into the period, which gave TCU a 36-34 advantage. The Longhorns proceeded to go on an 8-0 run to take a 42-36 lead with 17 minutes showing on the clock, but Washburn would calm the storm, sinking two-straight at the charity stripe.
With Texas clinging to a 42-38 advantage, Brandon Parrish knocked down a big time jumper to inch TCU closer. The junior continued his hot shooting a few plays later, draining a three ball with 12:08 on the clock to make the scoreboard read 45-44 in slight favor of Texas.
The Longhorns would take a 52-48 advantage down the stretch until JD Miller got into the act, scoring down low to make it a two-point game with 6:38 left in the contest. The Frogs would tie it at the charity stripe and then watch as Chauncey Collins helped TCU take a 56-54 lead with 2:46 left.
Texas would regain the lead at 57-56 with 1:32 showing on the clock, but a huge jumper by Washburn with a minute left allowed TCU to take a 58-57 advantage. The junior sealed the game with a game-winning block on the final play to propel TCU to its first conference win of the year.
Texas opened the game jumping out to a 4-1 lead before Washburn went to work, scoring down low to make the scoreboard read 4-3. A few plays later, Parrish got into the act, draining a triple and TCU was in business.
The teams would go back and forth the next couple of minutes and the Frogs would take a 12-10 lead off a runner from Collins at the 15:42 mark. Texas went on a mini run to regain the advantage at 16-14, but Miller would have nothing tying the ballgame at 16-16 midway through.
The Frogs then broke the game open, going on a 10-0 run, which included a huge block by Shepherd followed by a three-ball by Parrish to make the scoreboard read 26-16. Texas would continue to battle though, pulling within 30-27 with a 1:27 left in the half.
TCU would take a 34-32 lead into intermission.
Quote of the Game
Trent Johnson
"It's nice to win a game against a good team. I can't tell you what the kids have been going through to try to get over the hump and play good basketball. This league is very unforgiving and talented. It's on to the next one. There are a lot more good teams in this league and they're very talented. We have our work cut out for us moving forward."
