LAWRENCE, Kan. - TCU pushed No. 1 Kansas throughout the entire game Saturday afternoon, but ended up falling just short to the Jayhawks inside Allen Fieldhouse, 70-63.
The Rundown
The Horned Frogs, who moved to 9-8 overall and 1-4 in Big 12 play, had three players score in double-figures Saturday. Junior Michael Williams led the way, scoring a season-high 13 points on 6-for-9 from the field in the second half. Chauncey Collins and Brandon Parrish were also in double-figures, tallying 11 points apiece.
Not to be outdone, sophomore Vladimir Brodziansky just missed his second career double-double, scoring eight points and corralling a career-high 12 rebounds.
TCU outscored Kansas (15-2; 4-1 Big 12) in the second half, 35-33, and were able to cut it to single-digits late, but in the end couldn't make up the difference despite shooting 50 percent from behind the following halftime and holding the Jayhawks to a 1-for-10 showing from three in the period. For the game, the Frogs' relentless defense limited the nation's No. 1 ranked team to only 25 percent from deep.
Just like he did in the first half, Parrish started off hot during the early stages of the second stanza of action, nailing a three ball from an assist from Chris Washburn to make the scoreboard read 41-35 at the 16-minute mark. In all, the Frogs went on a 7-2 run after Kansas' first bucket of the period.
The two teams would go back and forth the next couple of trips, but the Jayhawks were able to take a 53-41 advantage with 12:14 showing on the scoreboard. JD Miller would come back to make it a 12-point game at 57-45 a few plays later, but TCU was only able to cut it to seven in the final minute.
Parrish started red hot for the Frogs, drilling two three's in the opening minutes to give the Purple and White a 6-4 lead with 17:24 on the clock. A few plays later, Brodziansky got into the act, tickling the twine from deep and TCU was in business. He then watched as Collins nailed two-straight from behind the arc to tie the ballgame at 15-15 with 10:48 showing on the clock.
By the time Washburn soared through the air midway through, the Frogs had jumped on top 19-15. During the stretch, the junior scored four-straight, including a tough layup at the 9:24 mark to increase the Purple and White advantage.
Kansas proceeded to go on a 16-2 run over the next couple of minutes to take a 31-21 lead, but TCU would continue to fight, pulling within 33-25 at the 2:24 mark when Miller soared to the hole and found the bottom of the net to stall the Jayhawk attack.
Following a late free throw by Brodziansky, Kansas would take a 37-28 lead into halftime.
Quote of the Game
Trent Johnson
"I'm not in to moral victories but I thought we made some strides in our overall effort to compete. There was a period or two there where they had a chance to run and get some separation, but I thought our guys fought back. I thought all of our guys did a good job of competing. They're making big plays against a good team. I think they all competed."
