FORT WORTH, Texas -- The No. 10 TCU men's tennis team remained undefeated at home and improved to 10-0 this season at the Bayard H. Friedman Tennis Center by defeating No. 21 Texas Tech on Thursday night, 4-2.
The Horned Frogs (16-6, 2-2) picked up three points quickly against the Red Raiders (16-5, 0-1), but the final point would take a big battle, as freshman Cameron Norrie took a tiebreaker at the No. 2 position to seal the victory for TCU.
"That was a great college battle," head coach David Roditi said. "Our boys had to dig in deep. We had many opportunities to finish the match earlier and I'm proud of our guys for continuing to dig and fight for every point.
"There was a great doubles performance at No. 2 and a great clinch for our No. 1 doubles team. When we win the doubles point and then get quick wins on courts five and six, it puts us in a very good position and puts a lot of pressure on our opponents. Now we take care of our bodies and be ready for another top-25 battle on Saturday."
TCU got off to a quick start in doubles action, as No. 18 Trevor Johnson and Norrie posted a 6-2 victory on court two. Just moments later, the No. 19 ranked pairing and senior duo of Nick Chappell and Will Stein finished out their match by defeating No. 25 Felipe Soares and Hugo Dojas to clinch the doubels point for the Frogs. Chappell and Stein moved up to 20 wins on the season and earned their eighth victory over a ranked opponent.
The winning did not stop there for TCU, as the Frogs took command of the singles portion of the match by taking the first set on four of the six courts. Senior Facudno Lugones walked off the courts first, as the Argentina native captured a 6-0, 6-2 win at No. 5 singles to put TCU up 2-0 in the match. Lugones record his fifth straight win and 14th of the season.
Stein finished off his match next by taking down Connor Curry, 6-3, 6-3 for his 18th win of the season to put the Frogs on the brink of victory at 3-0.
The final point would be a challenge, as Texas Tech took wins on courts four and one to put the score at 3-2. No. 37 Norrie had to dig deep to pull out his victory to clinch the match for the Frogs and came out with a straight set win over Dojas at the No. 2 position to seal the victory.
TCU will remain at home, as the Frogs welcome No. 22 USF on Saturday, April 4 at 1 p.m., to the Bernard J. `Tut' Bartzen Varsity Courts.
