FORT WORTH, Texas TCU had four players score in double-figures Saturday night, but just missed on some key opportunities in the second half despite leading at halftime, falling to No. 17 Iowa State at Wilkerson-Greines, 89-76.The Horned Frogs, who closed the regular-season with a 17-14 overall record, including a 4-14 mark in league play, led at the break, 32-26, but the Cyclones showed why they are one of the premier scoring teams in the nation in the second half as they made a variety of tough shots under relentless defensive pressure from the Purple and White, who had won three-straight at home heading into Saturday.
Sophomore Kenrich Williams had a solid night as the Waco native tallied a team-high 17 points, while grabbing nine boards and dishing out a career-high seven assists. In his final home game of his career, Kyan Anderson totaled 16 points and moved into No. 2 all-time in school history in career starts with 116. Fellow senior Trey Zeigler added 14 points and Brandon Parrish rounded out the double-digit scorers for TCU with 11 on the night.
Georges Niang and Monte' Morris both scored 19 points apiece, respectively, to lead Iowa State Saturday.
On the night, the Frogs out-rebounded the Cyclones to the tune of 39-31 with Karviar Shepherd leading the way with 10 boards. TCU also held a slight advantage in second-chance points, holding a 13-11 advantage. The Frogs shot 41.9 percent from the field and 77.3 percent from the charity stripe.
Chris Washburn got going early in the second half, spinning past his defender for the bucket, but ISU responded to take a 37-34 lead before Williams buried a triple at the 17:13 mark of the second half.
The two teams would go back and forth until Amric Fields nailed a turn-around jumper with 14:07 showing to pull the Purple and White within 47-43. Both would trade buckets the next couple of trips until Shepherd made it a 53-47 ballgame.
The Frogs would continue to battle midway through as the sophomore threw down a nasty one handed dunk inside the paint to make the scoreboard read 60-53. On the next possession, Zeigler scored down low, but Iowa State continued their hot shooting from deep to push their lead back to 10 at 65-55.
TCU would score four out of the next five points in the game to pull within 66-59 with a little over 7 minutes remaining. The Cyclones would push it to 13 with back-to-back three's before Zeigler exploded to the rim to make it 74-63 at the 5-minute mark. A few plays later, Anderson buried a triple and Williams connected on an old-fashioned three-point play to pull TCU within 79-71, but the Frogs couldn't get any closer.
Iowa State jumped out to a 5-0 lead early, but Anderson drilled a three ball with the shot clock expiring to pull TCU within three at the 16:35 mark. The senior would go on to score two more at the charity stripe on the next trip down the court to tie the game at 5-5.
With the Cyclones holding a slight 8-7 lead, Fields went to work, turning his defender and hitting on a fade-away jumper with 13:51 showing on the clock. A few trips later, Williams found Zeigler on a run-out and TCU was in business, now up 11-8.
With the Frogs clinging to a 13-10 advantage, Parrish ripped the nets for five straight, including a deep three, to give the Purple and White an eight-point lead at 18-10 with 8:54 left to go in the opening frame.
Zeigler would soar to the basket with a little over 6 minutes remaining in the half and then watch as Anderson tickled the twine from deep on the next possession, which brought the TCU advantage to 23-16. Parrish then forced the Clones to take a timeout, burying his second triple of the game from the corner to make the scoreboard read 26-16 with 4:21 showing in the first half.
A late three by Anderson allowed TCU to take a 32-26 lead into intermission.
