The Horned Frogs, who are now 4-0 against K-State in post-season play, limited the Wildcats to only 39.7 percent from field, including 16.7 percent from beyond the arc. They also forced K-State into 13 turnovers, while outscoring the Wildcats in second-chance points, 21-16.
On the day, TCU went on a 16-2 run in the first half to build a 35-27 lead at the break thanks in large part to its scrappy defense. Late in the first half, a solid defensive effort helped limit K-State to only 4-of-15 shooting midway through. The Horned Frogs never trailed the rest of the way and were able to ice the game at the free throw line to improve to 18 wins overall.
Washburn, who grabbed eight boards, tallied a game-high 16 points on a career-high 8-of-11 from the field. In his 117th career start, Anderson totaled 16 points on 5-of-13 from the floor, including 4-for-7 from behind the arc. Fellow senior Trey Zeigler added 15 points on 6-for-12 from the field, while Karviar Shepherd added nine points and a team-high nine boards in the victory.
With the win, TCU improved to 18-14 overall and moved on to Thursday's quarterfinals to face No. 1 Kansas at 1:30 p.m. Kansas State ended their season at 15-17 overall.
The two teams would open the second half trading possessions, but K-State would pull within six at 39-33 before Washburn found the bottom of the net again to stymie the attack with 17:18 showing on the clock.
With TCU clinging to a 41-39 lead, the sophomore buried yet another jumper to give the Frogs a four-point advantage with a little over 15 minutes remaining in the second half. A few plays later, Amric Fields powered home a dunk to make it a 45-40 ballgame with 12:29 showing on the scoreboard. The senior then scored inside the paint on the next possession and TCU had jumped out to a seven-point lead with 11 minutes left to go in the game.
Anderson then tickled the twine from deep midway through to light up the scoreboard at 50-44 before Washburn spun by his defender and connected on a tough reverse layup to make the score 54-44 in favor of TCU with 7:52 showing in the clock.
K-State would cut it to two late at 64-62, but the Frogs were able to make some key free throws down the stretch to move onto tomorrow's quarterfinal round against No. 1 Kansas.
Anderson gave TCU a 5-4 lead early, burying a three ball with 18:01 showing on the clock. A few trips later, Washburn connected on a tough layup and the Frogs were off and running, now up 7-6.
K-State would take a 14-10 lead before Zeigler slid by his defender and found pay dirt off the glass at the 12:17 mark of the opening frame. Washburn then got into the act, nailing a jumper to make it a 16-14 ballgame before Anderson hit his second triple of the game to give the Purple and White a 17-16 advantage with a little over 9 minutes remaining in the half.
With TCU up 19-16, Shepherd knocked down a jumper to increase the TCU lead to 21-16. Washburn then soared to the rim for a thunderous dunk and the Purple and White were in business, now up 24-18 with a little over 6 minutes remaining in the period. In all, the Purple and White jumped all over the Wildcats off a 10-0 run.
TCU increased it to a 10-point advantage a few trips later at 28-18 and then watched as Anderson took over, draining a three ball and then hitting a cutting Zeigler with a no-look pass for the flush at the 3:15 mark to make it a 33-21 lead.
The two teams would go back and forth the next couple of trips, but the Frogs took a 35-27 advantage into the break thanks in large part to a solid defensive effort that limited K-State to only 4-of-15 shooting midway through the first half.
