The Horned Frogs, who held a 13-7 advantage in second chance points, went toe-to-toe with the Bears in the first half, going back and forth during the period, but midway through the second half Baylor broke a 45-39 ballgame wide-open and TCU wasn't able to recover.
The Frogs, who are receiving votes in this week's USA Today Coaches Poll, moved to 14-8 overall and 1-8 in league play with the loss, while the Bears improved to 17-5 overall and 5-4 in conference action. The Purple and White were playing their fifth-straight ranked opponent Wednesday, with all five being ranked inside the top-20.
Amric Fields led TCU with a team and season-high 14 points on 6-of-7 from the floor. The senior did most of his damage in the first half, scoring 10 points on 4-of-5 shooting. Waco native Kenrich Williams and senior Trey Zeigler added 11 points apiece, respectively. Williams just missed a double-double on the night, totaling a team-high eight boards.
Baylor was carried by Rico Gathers as he scored 14 points, while grabbing a game-high 17 rebounds. Kenny Cherry added 13 points on 5-of-8 from the field.
During the opening stages of the second half, the Frogs turned defense into offense as Zeigler stole the rock, found Kyan Anderson who proceeded to lob it to Williams for the alley-oop. Anderson then found the bottom of the net from deep to make it a 43-36 ballgame early in the period.
Baylor responded though, advancing its lead midway through the second half to 19, but TCU continued to fight as Fields scored a tough-minded layup at about the 12-minute mark to close the gap. The Frogs' would continue to pull closer at the charity stripe, knocking down four-straight to make it a 58-45 ballgame with 11:46 left.
With the score 64-47 after a fast break bucket by Fields following a beautiful behind the back dish from Anderson, TCU appeared poised to make a run in the ballgame in the closing minutes, but it was too late as the Bears swept the season-series.
Baylor jumped out to an early 8-0 lead, but Williams stymied the Bear attack, knocking down a jumper 4 minutes the contest. A few plays later, the Frogs threw down back-to-back thunderous dunks by Zeigler and Williams to make the scoreboard read 10-8 in slight favor of Baylor with 14:24 showing on the clock. During that stretch, TCU went on an 8-2 run, while putting the clamps down on the Bear attack on the defensive end of the court.
With the score 16-10 midway through, Fields got into the act, driving to the rack and scoring a tough runner to make it a 16-12 ballgame with 11:25 left in the period. The Bears would push it to 23-12, but Zeigler once again halted the momentum, scoring on a backdoor layup. On the next trip down the court, Shepherd found the bottom of the net on a hook and TCU was right back in business, pulling within 23-16 with a little over 8 minutes remaining.
The two teams would go back and forth the next couple of trips until Fields buried a three ball from the corner to bring the scoreboard to 26-23 in slight favor of Baylor with only 4:13 showing on the clock. The senior would scorch the nets once again from the corner a few plays later to make it 31-26 down the stretch.
A late tip-in by Fields brought the halftime score to 37-29 in slight favor of Baylor.
