FORT WORTH, Texas - TCU had four players score in double-figures Saturday en route to a 70-55 drubbing of No. 21 Oklahoma State at Wilkerson-Greines AC.
With the win, the Horned Frogs improved to 15-10 overall and 2-10 in Big 12 action, while the Cowboys, who came into Saturday having defeated three-straight ranked opponents, fell to 17-8 overall and 7-6 in league play.
TCU, who forced OSU into 17 turnovers and a dismal 18.8 percent from deep for the game, shot a blistering 52 percent from the field and a season-high 78.3 percent at the charity stripe. The Frogs also out-rebounded the Cowboys to the tune of 30-25, including 11-10 on the offensive end. It marked the 16th time this season the Purple and White have out-rebounded their opponent.
TCU, who trailed at the half by two, simply turned it on in the second half, shooting 61 percent from the field and 92.3 percent from the line during the period. The Frogs outscored Oklahoma State during the second stanza, 44-27, jumping all over the national ranked Cowboys with an 18-5 run after the game was tied at 48-48 with 9:06 on the clock. In all, TCU used a pair of 10-0 runs in the second half, the latter coming in the closing 4 minutes to clinch the victory.
In a game that featured 10 ties and eight lead changes, Kyan Anderson carried the Frogs with a team-high 14 points, while dishing the rock seven times. It was a special night for the senior as he moved into No. 7 all-time in program history in scoring, surpassing Lee Nailon and Ryan Carroll. Fellow senior Trey Zeigler was also in double-figures, totaling 13 points on a perfect 5-for-5 from the field. Not to be outdone, Amric Fields and Karviar Shepherd rounded out the Horned Frog notables on the offensive end, tallying 12 and 10 points, respectively. Fields also went 6-for-7 from the charity stripe Saturday.
Zeigler scored the rock on the opening possession to knot it up at 28-28, but the Cowboys responded with a three on the other end to regain the lead. The senior would dart to the hole and find pay dirt a few plays later after an assist from Anderson at the 18:19 mark to make it a 33-30 ballgame. Chris Washburn then got into the act, spinning past his defender and laying it in to pull the Frogs within three at 35-32.
Shepherd made it a 37-36 game with a little over 15 minutes remaining and then watched as Zeigler connected on two-straight at the charity stripe to give TCU a 38-37 advantage. Following a floater by Anderson, Shepherd rattled the rim at the 13:38 mark of the second half to give the Purple and White a 42-37 lead.
Oklahoma State would continue to battle though, nailing a triple until Fields rattled in a jumper to give TCU a 44-40 lead midway through. The Cowboys would tie it at 44-44, but Brandon Parrish's step-back jumper with a little over 9 minutes remaining in the contest regained the Purple and White lead.
The two teams would go back and forth the next couple of trips and with score knotted at 48-48, Fields calmly stepped to the line and hit back-to-back free throws. Parrish then went coast-to-coast for the bucket and TCU had seized all the momentum as they were now up 52-48 with 6 minutes showing on the clock.
Following a block by Fields, the Frogs then forced a 5 second count and seemed to be in business on both ends of the court as Anderson drove by a would-be defender and connected on a reverse layup to make it a 54-48 lead with only 5:32 showing on the clock.
With TCU leading 59-53 after some solid trips to the free throw line, Kenrich Williams exploded to the rack and threw down a nasty dunk over a defender to make it a 61-53 lead with 2 minutes left in the contest. On the next trip down the court, Fields connected on a three-point play and TCU was now up by 11 at 64-53. The Frogs never looked back the rest of the way, winning comfortably.
The two teams would open the game going back and forth until Zeigler would fly in and tip-in a rebound at about the 16-minute mark to give TCU a 6-4 lead. The Frogs would push it to 9-6 a few plays later as Williams nailed a jumper at the 14:41 mark.
The Cowboys would score the next four to take a 10-9 lead at the 12-minute mark, but Fields would have nothing of it, finding the bottom of the net on a turn-around jumper to regain the Purple and White advantage.
With the scoreboard 15-11 in favor of Oklahoma State, Washburn connected on a baby hook inside the paint to inch TCU closer with a little over 8 minutes remaining in the half. The sophomore would then score on a beautiful reverse layup on the next possession to make the scoreboard 17-15 after a bucket by the Cowboys.
With 5:47 showing on the clock, Shepherd nailed a jumper on the baseline, which brought the Frogs within 19-17. On the next possession, the Purple and White got defensive as Williams drew a charge and the Frogs were off and running as Parrish found wide-open lane off a cut to tie the ballgame at 19-19 with 4 minutes and some change remaining in the period.
Down the stretch, Anderson faked one way, drew contact and connected on a tough layup to make the scoreboard read 26-24 in slight favor of Oklahoma State. The senior would tie it up at the charity stripe a few plays later, but the Cowboys would take a slight 28-26 lead into the break.
