FORT WORTH, Texas - In a game that featured 18 ties and 11 lead changes, TCU pushed No. 21 Baylor to overtime Saturday, but couldn't make enough plays in the extra stanza, dropping a hard-fought 66-59 decision to the Bears at Wilkerson-Greines.
The Horned Frogs, who are now 13-3 overall and 0-3 in Big 12 action, played in their 109th overtime game in program history Saturday. The last time the Purple and White played an OT game was March 3, 2012 versus San Diego State.
Simply put, TCU did everything right against the Bears on the defensive end, holding Baylor to only 29.8 percent from the field and a dismal 8.3 percent from behind the arc. In the end though it wasn't enough as the Bears improved to 12-3 overall and 1-2 in league action.
Anderson scored a team-high 16 points on 6-of-15 from the field. Kenrich Williams followed, just missing a double-double with nine points and eight rebounds.
Baylor was carried by Rico Gathers' 17-point, 18 rebound effort. Taurean Prince was also in double-figures, scoring 17 points, while grabbing 10 boards.
Anderson put the Frogs, who led by five with 4:46 left to go in the ballgame, on the board a minute into the second half, connecting on a teardrop to make the scoreboard read 30-30. Trey Zeigler then found a cutting Brandon Parrish to propel the Frogs up by two.
The two teams would trade possessions the next couple of trips, but Baylor took a 39-36 lead with a little over 13 minutes remaining in the contest.
TCU pulled within one as Anderson nailed back-to-back from the charity stripe. The senior came back to hit another floater and the Frogs were now up 40-39 with 10:09 showing on the clock.
A rim-rattling dunk over his defender by Karviar Shepherd at the 8-minute mark gave TCU a 42-40 lead and seemed to ignite the crowd. A few plays later, Zeigler skied to the rim for a flush of his own to make it a 44-40 lead and the Frogs were off and running.
Anderson broke a 44-44 ballgame, nailing a triple and then finding Fields for a layup, which made the scoreboard read 49-44 in favor of the Purple and White. Baylor responded with five-straight to tie the ballgame at 49-49.
With the game at 53-53 with a minute left in regulation, the Bears' Kenny Chery's shot was blocked by Shepherd and Baylor committed a shot clock violation, turning the ball over with 1.7 seconds left. Anderson caught the inbounds pass for the Frogs but stumbled and wasn't able to get a shot off as time expired, sending the game into overtime.
In overtime, TCU tried to capture some magic, but was outscored 13-6 in the period.
Shepherd got the Frogs going right out of the gate, draining a mid-range jumper on the opening possession, but Baylor responded with an 8-2 run. Zeigler then went to work, spinning past his would-be defender and laying it in to pull the Frogs within two about 5 minutes into the opening frame of play.
With the scoreboard reading 8-7 in slight favor of the Bears, Anderson drilled a deep triple to put TCU ahead at the 12:37 mark of the period. A few plays later, Fields corralled a rebound and reversed it in to make it 12-9 in favor of the Frogs at the 11:11 mark of the half.
The two teams would go back and forth the next couple of trips, but Baylor was able to jump on top 19-16 with 7:04 showing on the scoreboard. The Frogs responded in a big way though as Parrish blocked a would-be shot on one end, which led to Anderson scoring on the other end from an assist from Williams.
The two teams would battle to a 21-21 draw down the stretch, but the Frogs were able to take a 25-23 lead at the charity stripe with a little over 2 minutes to go before intermission. The game would end up knotted at 28-28 at halftime.
