NORMAN, Okla. - TCU gave No. 25 Oklahoma all it wanted Wednesday night, but couldn't overcome a late surge by the Sooners, falling at the Lloyd Noble Center, 77-69.
In a game that featured several runs by both teams, the Frogs, who moved to 9-9 overall and 0-6 in league play, tied the game at 66-66 with 3:36 showing on the clock, but OU outlasted the Purple and White down the stretch, closing the game on an 11-3 run to eventually move to 15-4 overall and 4-2 in conference action.
TCU stood toe-to-toe with the nation's No. 25 ranked team Wednesday, outscoring the Sooners in the paint, 34-26. The Frogs, who shot 43 percent from the field, including 52.4 percent from the field in the second half, hounded OU into 15 turnovers. For a majority of the game, the Purple and White turned those turnovers into points on the other end, outscoring the Sooners, 24-19.
Junior Kyan Anderson led the way, scoring a game-high 23 points on 7-of-15 from the field. The Fort Worth native has now recorded five 20-point games this season. Fellow junior and Oklahoma City native Amric Fields followed with 15 points, while Karviar Shepherd posted his second career double-double, tallying 12 points and 11 boards. Shepherd has now scored in double-figures in three-straight conference games.
Oklahoma was led by Buddy Hield's 16 points on 7-of-14, while Cameron Clark added 15 points. Ryan Spangler chipped in with 13 points and a game-high 16 rebounds.
The Frogs came out of the locker room firing as Anderson found senior Jarvis Ray for an early layup and then watched as Shepherd drilled a jumper, which made the score 42-40. TCU then pulled within one on a beautiful backdoor layup at the 17:08 mark and the Frogs appeared to have something cooking early on in the second stanza, now down only 43-42.
OU would jump on top 47-43 off a mini 4-1 run, but Fields would rattle home two-straight at the charity stripe to pull the Frogs within two at 47-45 with a little over 14 minutes remaining the second period. Shepherd tied the game at 47-47 by powering home a jumper, but Oklahoma was able to push the scoreboard to 59-49 off a 12-2 run midway through the second half.
Fields would end the run at the 9:38 mark, draining a triple to pull the Frogs closer. Because of a foul call on the play, Anderson followed by tickling the twine and TCU was in business, now down only 59-55 with 8:59 showing on the clock.
Trailing 61-58 midway through thanks to a 9-2 run, TCU continued to fight and not back down as Anderson crossed over his defender and finger rolled in a layup to make the scoreboard read 66-61 with 4:42 showing. The junior continued to roll a few plays later, recording an old fashioned three-point play, which pulled the Frogs within two at 66-64.
Fields then proceeded to tie the game at 66-66, but Oklahoma responded to close out the game the rest of the way.
TCU took an early 4-2 lead four minutes into the contest off a Brandon Parrish jumper at the top of the key, but it was short lived as OU bounced back with two-straight triples on the other end to make the scoreboard read 8-4 at the 14:25 mark of the opening stanza. Fields then gave the Frogs a spark, scoring five-straight, including a triple with a little over 13 minutes to go in the half, to pull the Frogs within one at 8-7.
The two teams would go back and forth the next couple of trips, dialing it up from deep, until freshman Michael Williams made it a three-point game with 11:38 showing, driving by a would-be defender and finding pay-dirt off the glass, which made the score 17-14 in slight favor of the Sooners.
Anderson tickled the twine midway through to make it 19-17, but Oklahoma answered with two-straight trey balls of its own to pull back on top 25-17 at the nine-minute mark of the opening half. A few plays later, all-out hustle on the defensive end allowed the Frogs to go on a mini 6-0 run as Anderson found Ray down low for the bucket, which pulled the Frogs within 25-23 at the 7:30 mark.
Oklahoma would stymie the run at the charity stripe, but Shepherd would have nothing of it, laying in a turn-around jumper to inch the Frogs closer down the stretch and make the scoreboard read 27-25 in slight favor of OU with 6:37 showing.
The Sooners would stretch it to 38-28 off an 11-3 run before Fields crossed over his defender and glided to the hole for an easy bucket with a little over a minute to go. That really seemed to spark the Frogs as the Purple and White made it a 38-34 game with 1:09 showing when Anderson stole the rock and found the bottom of the net on the other end.
The Frogs closed the half on an 8-2 run to bring the intermission deficit to 40-36.
TCU returns home to face nationally ranked Kansas Saturday, beginning at 8:00 p.m. CT inside Daniel-Meyer Coliseum.
