FORT WORTH, Texas - The TCU volleyball team fell to No. 5 Texas 3-0 (19-25, 16-25, 15-25) in front of a sold out crowd of 1,350 Wednesday evening to open their second season in the Big 12 Conference.
The Horned Frogs (11-4, 0-1 Big 12) fought point-for-point with the defending national champions, but the Longhorns (7-2, 1-0 Big 12) and All-Americans Haley Eckerman and Bailey Webster proved to be too much to overcome.
The first set was a battle between the teams as the set saw 10 ties and five lead changes. Out of the media timeout with Texas leading 15-13, the Frogs went on a 4-1 run with two kills a piece from Regan McGuire and Natalie Gower for a 17-16 TCU lead. A service error tied the set back up, before kills from Eckerman gave the Longhorns the push the team needed to take the first set 25-19.
The teams continued to trade points into the second set, until a block from Texas and errors by TCU gave the Longhorns its first advantage at 12-7. The Frogs brought the match back within three at 17-14, but kills from Webster and Eckerman put Texas on an 8-2 run to close out the second set 25-16.
A slow start to the third set proved to be fatal for the Frogs as the Longhorn took advantage for an 8-2 lead and forcing TCU into an early timeout. A kill from Yvonne Igodan and a strong serving run from Alexia Heist pulled TCU back into the match and forced Texas to call a timeout at 11-8. The Frogs kept pushing and forced the Longhorn to commit three more errors to put the score at 13-12. Texas once again found a spark from Eckerman, as they finished the set on a 12-3 run to take the match in three.
Igodan led the Frogs with eight kills, while Blaire Pickens chipped in seven kills. Defensively, Shane Peters and Sutton Sunstrum each recorded nine digs, while Igodan, Gower and Mattie Burleson all recorded two blocks apiece.
For Texas, Eckerman recorded a double-double of 13 kills and 10 digs, while Webster had eight kills and no errors for a .348 hitting percentage. Molly McCage helped lead the Longhorns to a team total 10 blocks, by finishing the match with five blocks.
TCU will continue their opening week of Big 12 play by traveling to Lawrence, Kan., to take on the Kansas Jayhawks on Saturday, Sept. 28 at 1 p.m. The match will air live on MetroSports and ESPN3 at WatchESPN.com.
