"Initially, I didn't think we were ready for the first 15-20 minutes and it showed," said head coach Eric Bell. "After they scored, we restarted and got a goal. At that point our team felt we belonged. For the most part we battled hard. There were some instances where we didn't play hard and took short cuts. We didn't do all the things we needed to be successful. We were good in spurts, but we left the door open to lose the game."
Vittoria Arnold was strong in goal for the Horned Frogs as she made a season-high nine saves on 12 shots. TCU collected goals on its only two shots on goal.
"I didn't feel like we got dominated," said Bell. "While they had 33 shots, I thought some were hopeful shots and others were from distance. They definitely created dangerous opportunities, but not as many as the scoreboard indicated. On the flip side, we have to be able to create more for ourselves in order to be successful.
West Virginia (11-2-2, 5-0-0) seized early control in the match and the pressure resulted in a 1-0 lead in the eighth minute. Arnold made a pair of saves in the match's first five minutes but could not corral the long shot off the foot of Frances Silva. The league's leading goal scorer took the shot from about 25 yards out and boomed it into the upper right corner.
TCU battled back to tie the game in the 21st minute. The Mountaineers were whistled for a hand ball giving TCU a free kick. Makenzie Koch took the free kick and clanged it off the post. Lauren Sajewich was there for the rebound as she banged in her first career goal to knot the game.
The Mountaineers continued to push the attack as they earned six corners in the final 24 minutes of the half. The TCU defense did a solid job of limiting the chances for West Virginia and blocking shots. Arnold had to make just two saves the rest of the half.
West Virginia struck early in the second half, taking a 2-1 lead on a goal from Ashley Lawrence. Arnold made the stop on Schwindel's initial bid, but couldn't come up with it cleanly and the rebound bounced perfectly to Lawrence's foot for the go-ahead goal.
Just eight minutes later, the Frogs got the equalizer. Similar to the goal scored by West Virginia, Patry Carrion took a shot from distance that caromed off the post and right to a waiting Prokof. Her low shot to the far post was on target and the game was knotted at two.
TCU held the Mountaineers at bay for the remainder of the half. West Virginia fired off numerous shots, but Arnold was only called upon to make two saves to send the match to overtime.
In the extra time Arnold made a save in the first minute, but was beat in the 99th minute by Schwindel. Kelsie Maloney sent a through ball and hit Schwindel in stride. She dribbled into the penalty box and fired a shot to the far post from seven yards out for the game-winner.
TCU falls to 5-7-3 overall and 1-3-1 in conference play. The Frogs will play their final three regular season matches at home beginning Friday night against Oklahoma. Match time is set for 7 p.m. at Garvey-Rosenthal.
