GOODYEAR, Ariz.—The TCU men's golf team claimed its best finish of the season Saturday during the final round of the Desert Shootout at Palm Valley Golf Course, placing third among the group of 15 teams. Senior Tom Hoge and junior Johan de Beer led the Horned Frogs in the individual standings in a tie for sixth place.
TCU, which combined for a 2-under par score of 286 during the final round, finished -25 on the weekend, 23 strokes behind champion Oklahoma (-48) and one shot back of second-place Iowa State (-26).
The Frogs defeated three top-100 opponents in No. 31 North Texas, No. 32, No. 52 Tulsa and No. 85 Houston. The squad's top previous finish this season came during the fall campaign, when it tied for fifth place at the Isleworth Collegiate Invitational in Orlando, Fla.
Carding the Frogs' low individual score Saturday was de Beer, who fired a 3-under 69 to climb two spots in the standings while finishing -6 for the tournament. Hoge, who shot TCU's low round of the tournament Friday with a 65, finished alongside de Beer with an even-par 72 in the final round.
Sophomore Daniel Jennevret also played even-par golf Saturday while finishing in a tie for 13th place with a final score of -6. Junior Eli Cole, who was competing as an individual only this weekend, totaled a 71 during his final round to tie for 26th place at -3. Senior Scott Roudebush completed TCU's team score with a 1-over 73 to finish tied for 62nd at +4, while sophomore Pontus Gad tied for 74th overall at +9 for the tournament.
Oklahoma's Abraham Ancer ran away from the field to claim the individual championship, firing a final-round 63 to finish six strokes up at -21.
TCU will remain in Arizona in order to compete in the National Invitational Tournament, which will be played Monday and Tuesday at Tucson's OMNI Tucson National Golf Club.
