TUCSON, Ariz.--The TCU men's golf team completed the opening two rounds at a chilly, wind-blown National Invitational Tournament Monday at OMNI Tucson National Golf Club. The event will wrap up play Tuesday with the final round.
The Horned Frogs finished their second round in a tie for ninth place in the 15-team field with a 30-over par combined total of 598. Like many teams, TCU experienced a rough go to start the tournament, shooting +21 during the opening 18 holes played on the par-72, 7,245-yard Catalina Course. The squad fared much better in the second round, firing a 9-over par 289 on the par-70, 6,652-yard Sonoran Course.
Scoring was at a premium Monday, as each team in the field finished well over par. Arizona, SMU and Tulsa enter the final round in a three-way tie for the lead at +16. The Frogs were one of 12 teams to finish their rounds before competition was suspended due to darkness. The remaining three squads (Kent State, Indiana and Wyoming) will complete Round 2 early Tuesday morning.
The top Frog on the individual leaderboard entering the final round is sophomore Pontus Gad, who finds himself in a four-way tie for fourth place at +2. Gad, whose score will not count toward TCU's team total as he is competing only as an individual, fired a 1-under par 71 during the opening round before shooting a 3-over 73 on the second 18.
Senior Tom Hoge recorded TCU's low score for its team total with a 4-over par 146, which tied for eighth in the field. Hoge struggled during the opening round to the tune of a 6-over par 78 before catching fire in the second 18, when he shot a 2-under par 68. He is the lone player so far to finish the second round in red figures, and the performance was also marked the second-lowest overall during the opening two rounds of play.
Sophomore Daniel Jennevret is second on the squad through two rounds, finishing the day in a tie for 27th place with an 8-over par total of 150. Jennevret shot 77 and 73, respectively, in Rounds 1 and 2.Junior Johan de Beer trails Jennevret by one stroke in a tie for 33rd place at +9 after shooting respective totals of 76 and 75. Fellow junior Eli Cole rounded out TCU's team scoring at +11, which was good for a share of 51st place. Senior Scott Roudebush is tied for 67th place at +14 through two rounds.
TCU concludes competition at the National Invitational Tournament on Tuesday. Round 3 will begin with a shotgun start at 8 a.m. PT.
