FORT WORTH--A return to Daniel-Meyer Coliseum proved to be just what the doctor ordered for the TCU men's basketball team, as the Frogs ended a four-game skid with a 78-60 victory over Wyoming on Wednesday. Junior guard Ronnie Moss led the Frogs with game highs of 27 points and 10 rebounds.
TCU improved to 10-8 overall and 1-2 in Mountain West Conference play. Wyoming dropped to 8-9 overall and 1-2 in the MWC.
Moss shook off a recent slump to lead the Frogs to victory, posting his third career double-double and his first ever with double figures in rebounds. His point total broke a TCU individual season high set by Amric Fields, who had 26 points in the Dec. 28 win over Chicago State.
Moss went 9-of-17 from the field, including a career-best six 3-pointers on 11 attempts, while helping TCU shoot over the 50.0 percent mark at home for the seventh time in 10 games. TCU went 10-of-21 overall beyond the arc. Moss also excelled on defense, totaling a career-best four steals.
Four other Frogs scored in double figures, including junior forward Garlon Green, who had 16 points. Green made three treys on the evening, the fourth straight game that he has matched his career high. Three players chipped in 10 points each in senior guard Greg Hill, sophomore forward Nikola Cerina and Fields. Cerina added six rebounds, while senior guard Hank Thorns totaled a game-high 10 assists, his fourth game this season with double digits in dimes.
Two Cowboys reached double digits in points in guard Francisco Cruz and Amath M'Baye with 16 and 13 points, respectively. Cruz also totaled a team-high six rebounds. As a team, Wyoming managed to shoot 45.8 percent from the floor, but went only 4-of-18 (22.2 percent) from 3-point range. TCU forced the squad into 15 turnovers, which resulted in a 22-13 Frog advantage on the scoreboard.
TCU showed no effects of its recent woes in the first half, running out to a big halftime advantage. The Frogs hit six shots from beyond the arc on only 12 attempts and posted a 21-13 rebounding edge in the half. Moss fueled TCU's efforts on the glass by tying his previous career high in boards in the first half alone with eight.
A 12-0 run late in the half keyed by 3-pointers from Moss and Green, as well as a dunk by Green off a nice feed from Thorns, pushed TCU out to a 17-point edge by the final minute, 39-22. In addition to its offensive execution, TCU also put together a solid defensive effort against Wyoming in the period, limiting the squad to only nine field goals and no buckets over the final 7:20.
Wyoming hung around early in the second half, cutting the lead to only 10 points after an 8-1 run in the opening four minutes, but TCU responded with a 15-1 spurt to shut the door on the Pokes. Moss hit two treys in the stretch, while Fields had four points on a layup and a dunk. A Green 3-pointer pushed the Frogs' lead to 26 points, 69-43, with 7:24 remaining.
TCU returns to action Saturday, Jan. 15, when it travels to Fort Collins, Colo., to take on Colorado State at 8 p.m. CT. The game will be televised live by the MountainWest Sports Network (The Mtn.).
