FORT WORTH--TCU continued its home dominance Saturday, earning its 19th straight win at Daniel-Meyer Coliseum with a 77-47 victory over Air Force. The squad tied the program record for consecutive home victories previously set three seasons ago.
TCU improved to 17-5 overall with its 12th victory in the last 14 games. The squad also kept itself in at least a tie for first place in the Mountain West Conference standings by running its league record to 7-2.
The Lady Frogs put together one of their best offensive performances of the season, finishing the game shooting 51.9 percent from the field overall, including 6-of-13 from beyond the arc. The defense was strong, as it has been all conference season. Not only did the squad hold an opponent to under 40.0 percent shooting for the eighth time in nine MWC outings (34.0 percent), the Frogs also forced 22 turnovers that resulted in 34 points.
The victory helped TCU match the school record for longest home winning streak previously set between Jan. 28, 2005 and Feb. 22, 2007. The team has not lost at the DMC since a 62-46 setback to BYU on Jan. 13, 2009, and entering the weekend the streak ranked as the seventh-longest in NCAA Division I.
Junior guard/forward Helena Sverrisdottir had her typical all-around game for the Lady Frogs, putting up a game-high 17 points and matching a career-best six steals. Sverrisdottir got off to a hot start with 10 first-half points and finished the contest 7-of-8 from the field, including 3-for-3 from 3-point range.
Freshman forward DeLisa Gross matched Sverrisdottir's scoring total with a career-high 17 points, marking the second straight game she reached double figures. Gross pulled down six rebounds and went to the charity stripe a career-best 10 times, making seven.
Senior guards TK LaFleur and Eboni Mangum also put their stamps on TCU's victory. LaFleur set a season best by dishing out six assists, while Mangum totaled nine points and three helpers in only 14 minutes of action.
Two players in double figures led the Falcons, as forward Kelsey Berger scored 14 points and guard Raimee Beck added 12.
TCU jumped out to an early advantage, scoring 20 of the game's first 24 points. A 16-0 run highlighted the stretch, as Air Force was held scoreless for more than seven minutes until a Beck steal and layup ended the spurt 10 minutes into the contest. The squad made only one of its first 10 shots from the floor, while the Frogs went 8-of-13 in the first seven-plus minutes.
The Falcons regrouped with a 10-2 run to keep themselves in the game on the strength of treys by Beck and Berger, but TCU was able to close the half on a 13-2 run. A buzzer-beating 3-pointer by Sverrisdottir from 35 feet out put the Frogs up 38-19 at the break.
The margin closed to 14 points early the second half before TCU put the game away for good with a 20-0 run. The Frogs held the Falcons scoreless for nearly six minutes during the spurt, while themselves hitting 8-of-10 from the field. TCU led by as many as 37 points late in the second half.
TCU returns to the road Wednesday, when it travels to Salt Lake City, Utah, to take on the Utes at 8 p.m. CT. The game will be televised live nationally by CBS College Sports.
