SPRINGFIELD, Mass.--TCU junior point guard Hank Thorns is one of 66 players named national candidates for the 2011 Bob Cousy Award, the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame announced Monday. The annual award, named for Hall of Famer and former Boston Celtic Bob Cousy, recognizes college basketball's top point guard.
This original list of candidates will be narrowed down to a final 20 by Jan. 3, final 10 by Feb. 3 and final five by March 3. A Hall-of-Fame-appointed screening committee will be narrowing down the candidates, while a Blue Ribbon Selection Committee will ultimately choose the winner.
Both of the Hall of Fame committees are made up of top college basketball personnel including media members, head coaches, Sports Information Directors and Hall of Famers. The winner of the 2011 Bob Cousy Award will be presented at the Hall of Fame's Class Announcement on Monday April 4 in Houston as part of NCAA Final Four weekend.
Thorns, in his first season playing for TCU after transferring from Virginia Tech, entered the week leading the Mountain West Conference and ranking No. 18 nationally with a 6.1-assist-per-game average. A native of Las Vegas, Nev., Thorns is the only player in the MWC this season with 10 assists in a contest this season, and he has accomplished the feat three times in TCU's 11 games. In addition to his prowess distributing the rock, he also leads the Frogs in steals (1.4 spg) and ranks fourth in scoring (8.9 ppg) and fifth in rebounding (3.1 rpg).
Previous winners of the Bob Cousy Award have included: Jameer Nelson (St. Joseph's), Raymond Felton (North Carolina), Dee Brown (Illinois), Acie Law (Texas A & M), D.J. Augustin (Texas), Ty Lawson (North Carolina) and Greivis Vasquez (Maryland).
