SPRINGFIELD, Mass.—TCU dropped its first contest of the season Saturday to Rider, 76-61, in the team's opening game of the Hall of Fame Tip-Off tournament played at the MassMutal Center. The Broncos overcame a six-point halftime deficit, shooting 72.0 percent in the second half against the Frogs.
TCU fell to 2-1 overall, while Rider improved to 3-1.
Junior guard Ronnie Moss scored 15 points to lead TCU, while sophomore forward Garlon Green and freshman forward Amric Fields added 13 and 12 points, respectively. Green led the squad with eight rebounds. Junior guard Hank Thorns totaled eight points, four assists and four steals.
Guard Justin Robinson scored a game-high 18 points to pace Rider. Forward Novar Gadson and guard Mike Ringgold chipped in 15 and 12 points, respectively.
TCU led by a count of 34-28 at intermission, but Rider came out of the locker room on fire in the second half. The squad made its first 11 shots of the period and 16-of-17 to quickly turn its halftime deficit into a 66-51 edge with eight minutes remaining. The squad made 4-of-5 attempts from beyond the 3-point line during the stretch.
While the Broncos had all the answers on offense, the Frogs struggled to find consistency on defense in the second half after a strong opening period. TCU climbed out to a six-point lead in the first half, forcing 10 Rider turnovers while controlling the glass for much of the period. Green and Moss drilled back-to-back 3-pointers just over six minutes into the gmae, and Green added a free throw to push the advantage to eight points in the early going.
Rider cut its first-half deficit to one point on two occasions, but both times the Frogs responded with baskets. Fields hit a pair of field goals in the half's final minute to send the squad into the locker room up 34-28.
The second half was a much different story, as Robinson took control early in the period for Rider. The 6-2 senior scored 12 points in the first 12 minutes of the stanza to turn the contest in the Broncos' favor. Overall, the squad made 28-f-35 second-half field-goal attempts.
TCU looks to regroup Sunday, when it faces Bradley at 5 p.m. ET at the MassMutual Center.
