Sverrisdottir Makes History During TCU Win

FORT WORTH--Junior Helena Sverrisdottir recorded only the second triple-double in Lady Frog history while adding a couple other big career milestones Saturday to help lead TCU to a 78-74 comeback victory over Texas A&M-Corpus Christi at Daniel-Meyer Coliseum.
The victory, the Frogs fifth straight, moved TCU to 10-3 on the season. The record matches the second-best 13-game start in program history. The squad also notched its 14th consecutive victory at the DMC dating back to last season, which is the second-longest winning streak in school history. Corpus Christi dropped to 8-4 on the season.
Sverrisdottir took over the game in the second half after the Frogs trailed by five points, 35-30, at intermission. She scored 17 points in all and added 11 rebounds and 11 assists for the first triple-double by a TCU player since former Frog Sandora Irvin had 20 points, 18 boards and 16 blocked shots in a Jan. 16, 2005 win over UAB. Sverrisdottir's 10th assist on a layup by freshman forward Starr Crawford with 3:16 to play clinched the milestone.
In addition to earning the triple-double, Sverrisdottir also put herself on a level all by herself in the program's record books. Her 15th point of the day marked the 1,000th of her career, while she reached the 300-assist club on her sixth helper. The 6-1 native of Iceland is the only player in program history with 1,000 points, 500 boards and 300 assists.
After trailing by five points at intermission, Sverrisdottir and junior guard Emily Carter put TCU on their backs early in the second half to help push the Frogs to a 24-5 run out of the locker room for a 54-40 advantage. Carter accounted for nine of the points, while Sverrisdottir dished out five assists during the stretch.
The 14-point edge proved to be the high-water mark of the game, as Corpus Christi whittled away at the lead down the stretch. The squad first cut its deficit to single digits and eventually climbed back within two points in the game's final minute. Carter sealed the TCU victory with only 11 seconds remaining with a pair of clutch shots from the charity stripe.
While Sverrisdottir stole the headlines, Carter managed to score a team-high 19 points to help lead TCU. She went 6-of-13 from the field with a pair of 3-pointers and has now made at least two treys in four of the last five outings. Sverrisdottir's 17 points came on a 5-of-8 showing from the field, including two 3-pointers of her own. As a team, TCU shot 8-of-17 from behind the arc.
Freshman forward Starr Crawford also reached double figures in points for TCU by scoring 14 points on 7-of-12 shooting, while senior guard TK LaFleur added 11.
The Frogs scorched the nets in the second half to complete their comeback victory, shooting a sizzling 67.9 percent from the field after making only 10-of-36 (27.8 percent) field goals in the opening period. The sharp offensive effort in the second stanza ended with TCU totaling 23 assists for the game against only 11 turnovers.
The Islanders kept themselves within reach of the Frogs by dominating the glass to the tune of a 46-33 advantage that included 20 offensive boards. Center Elisa Beagle had a double-double with 17 points and a game-best 15 rebounds. Guard Shaye Montgomery proved a tough matchup outside the arc for the TCU defense, scoring a game-high 23 points with seven 3-pointers. Montgomery helped Corpus Christi sink 11 3-pointers on the afternoon.
The victory for TCU marked its seventh in seven opportunities this season against teams from the state of Texas. With no further regular-season matchups against in-state schools, the Frogs clinched only the fourth perfect season against Texas squads, as well as their best-ever showing against such teams. The squad's previous best record against in-state rivals was a 5-0 record in 2001-02.
With the non-conference season now behind them, the Frogs begin Mountain West Conference play Wednesday, when they travel to Air Force for a 7 p.m. MST tip-off at the Falcon's Clune Arena.
