LARAMIE, Wyo.—No. 22 TCU regrouped from a 16-point first half deficit to tie the game in the closing minutes, but Wyoming sank three crucial 3-pointers late to down the Frogs, 73-67, Wednesday at the Cowgirls' Arena-Auditorium.
TCU, which suffered its first Mountain West Conference loss of the season, fell to 12-4 overall and 2-1 in the MWC. The loss snapped a seven-game Lady Frog winning streak.
Three Frogs scored in double figures, led by junior guard Emily Carter with 20 points. Junior guard/forward Helena Sverrisdottir recorded her fifth double-double of the season with 15 points and 10 rebounds, while senior guard TK LaFleur chipped in 12 points. Freshman Starr Crawford led TCU's efforts on the glass with a game-high 13 rebounds, including seven on the offensive end.
Forward Hillary Carlson produced a huge effort for the Cowgirls with 29 points and 11 rebounds. She went 11-of-15 at the free-throw line. Guard Aubrey Vandiver (18 points), forward Emma Langford (13 points) and guard Kristen Scheffler (11 points) also scored in double figures.
Trailing by a 39-25 count at intermission, TCU wasted little time in cutting into the deficit early in the second half. Sverrisdottir and Carter each drained treys on the team's first two possessions, followed by a jumper by Carter to bring the Frogs back within six just over two minutes into the period.
TCU eventually tied the score thanks to a pair of 3-point plays by sophomore guard Antoinette Thompson, one from behind the arc and the other the traditional form. Thompson's free throw with 4:52 remaining knotted the score at 51-all after she skirted the baseline for a layup.
Wyoming responded with an 11-0 run that proved too much for TCU to overcome. Scheffler drilled a trio of 3-pointers in a 1:41 stretch in addition to a Vandiver layup that put the Cowgirls back on top by a 62-51 score with only 2:51 left. TCU tried to climb back into the game, but Wyoming made its free throws when they counted in the final minutes.
UW jumped out to a big lead in the game's opening minutes, recording 14 of the first 16 points. TCU was ice cold from the field, missing its first 11 shots until senior guard Eboni Mangum scored on the fastbreak off a nice feed from Thompson with 13:58 remaining in the first period. The Cowgirls went 6-of-8 from the field to begin the game.
Mangum's basket kicked started a 13-2 TCU run the cut the lead to only one point, as a LaFleur trey at the 10:44 mark ended the spurt. Wyoming regrouped by scoring 19 of the next 23 points. Following a Carter jumper with 9:18 remaining, the Frogs were held without a field goal for nearly six and a half minutes while the Cowgirls moved out to a 35-19 lead. TCU would enter the locker room at the half trailing 39-25.
Three Cowgirls accounted for nearly all of the damage in the first half. Vandiver scored 13 points, while Carlson and Langford each added 12. TCU shot only 24.2 percent in the stanza. Wyoming finished at 45.2 percent.
