
Volleyball Falters In 3-2 Loss At SMU

In total, four Frogs reached double digits in kills. Along with Otto, Kourtney Edwards and Irene Hester each finished with 12 and Christy Hudson pitched in with 11. Katelyn Blackwood tallied 20 digs to lead the team and Kristen Hester notched five blocks in the contest.
In the decisive fifth set, the Frogs found themselves with a big hill to climb as the Mustangs stormed out to an 11-4 lead. The Frogs nearly accomplished the feat as they got back within one at 14-13. Irene Hester started the rally with a kill and Megan Munce kept it going with strong serving. Along with a Munce ace and a kill from Hudson, the Mustangs committed three errors to help the Frogs cause.
Back-to-back kills from Edwards gave the Frogs a chance, but Kendra Kahanek dashed the Frogs efforts with a kill to lock up the 15-13 set five win for SMU.
TCU needed a strong fourth set to rebound from losses in sets two and three. The Frogs got the effort they needed, helped along by six kills from Otto. TCU took the early lead in the set only to see the Mustangs battle back to take a 15-14 lead. Irene Hester tied the set at 15 and the Frogs would never trail again as they claimed the 25-21 victory to even the match at two.
SMU had rebounded from the set one loss with two straight wins to take the 2-1 match lead. In the second, the Frogs wasted an 18-11 lead as SMU battled back to tie the match at one. A furious rally by the Mustangs saw them out score the Frogs 14-5 for the 25-23 win. In the third, the Mustangs took a 2-1 lead and never looked back en route to the 25-17 win.
The Frogs had taken an early 1-0 match lead with a 25-21 set one victory. Hudson was a force in the set as she came up with two straight kills to turn an 8-7 deficit into a 9-8 lead. Back-to-back blocks from Otto and Edwards helped the lead grow to five, 15-10. SMU would creep back within three at 21-18, but a Hudson blast put the Frogs back in control. Otto gave TCU set point and Irene Hester finished the win.
TCU (5-3) will head to Akron, Ohio for its third tournament of the season as the Frogs take part in the Akron Invitational. The Frogs open play in the tournament Friday afternoon against St. Francis (Pa.) at 1:30 p.m. (CST).
