
Win Streak Reaches Seven; Frogs Sweep BYU

FORT WORTH, Texas - Another dominating effort guided the TCU volleyball team to its seventh straight victory as they defeated BYU 3-0 (25-12, 25-18, 25-18) Thursday night. TCU improves to 22-5 on the season and 11-2 in league play. Meghan Horio rolled off a ton of points on her serve and pitched in with 12 digs. Kourtney Edwards paced the team with a match-high 13 kills.Horio served 19 times in the match and picked up 13 points for the Frogs. Irene Hester dropped in nine kills to go along with seven digs. Lauren Otto tallied seven kills and 12 digs and Katelyn Blackwood racked up a match-high 22 digs. Christy Hudson paced the team with four blocks.
Horio got the Frogs rolling in the first set as she served TCU out to a 7-1 lead. Edwards was unstoppable in the middle as she blasted three kills. Munce pitched in with two and Otto one to put the Frogs in control early.
Leading 12-6 in the set, another strong run behind the serving of Irene Hester helped the Frogs build a commanding 16-7 lead. Back-to-back blocks from Hudson and Kristen Hester along with kills from Hudson, Otto and Irene Hester played a role in the Frog run. Kristen Hester put the ball back in the hands of the Frogs with a 22-12 lead and Munce served out the set. She pitched in an ace and two straight hitting errors locked up the 25-12 first set victory for TCU.
A tighter affair in the second set saw the teams battle through five ties and two lead changes. TCU took the early 7-3 lead only to see the Cougars tighten up defensively and take control of the set with a 10-4 run to give them a 13-11 advantage.
Otto quelled the Cougar momentum with a kill and Irene Hester tied the set at 14 with a cross court blast. TCU rattled off four straight points to take a 17-14 lead on kills by Irene Hester, Kristen Hester and Munce. A service ace by Munce and an attack error by the Cougars put the Frogs in control at 20-15. Hudson gave the Frogs set point and Edwards finished off the 25-18 set two victory with her ninth kill of the match.
In the third set, the Cougars put up a tough fight as they tried to get back in the match, but each time they rallied, the Frogs had an answer. The set saw seven ties and four lead changes. BYU took an 11-10 lead on a kill from Camilla Phillips, but Edwards had an answer with a kill in the middle that spurred a 5-0 run that would put the Frogs in front to stay.
TCU continued to build on its lead, working it to six points, 22-16, on a kill from Irene Hester. A block from Hudson and Kristen Hester made it a seven-point lead and Otto gave the Frogs match point with her second kill of the set. Edward finished off the 25-18 win and sealed the match victory.
TCU will try and tie the school record for wins in a season as it aims for win No. 23 Saturday afternoon. The Frogs will play host to Utah beginning at 1 p.m. at the University Rec Center.
