CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. - The No. 25 TCU women's tennis team dropped a hard-fought 4-3 decision to No. 41 Virginia Saturday at the Boyd Tinsley Tennis Courts. The loss dropped the Horned Frogs to 0-1 overall, while the Cavaliers improved to 2-0 on the season.
The Frogs had a rough start to the day, falling in all three doubles matches. The 16th-ranked senior duo of Macall Harkins and Anna Sydorska fell to No. 32 Jennifer Stevens and Emily Fraser, 8-5. Junior Nina Munch-Soegaard and freshman Gaby Mastromarino had a tough time against Amanda Rales and Neela Vaez, losing 8-4, while newcomer Kayla Duncan and sophomore Katariina Tuohimaa dropped their match against Lindsey Hardenbergh and Maggie Yahner by a score of 8-4.
"Virginia played excellent in doubles and we couldn't quite match their level today," TCU head coach Jefferson Hammond said. "We are better than that in doubles, but it would have been tough to beat them regardless today."
TCU bounced back in singles action, taking two of the first three matches. Munch-Soegaard, ranked No. 12 in singles play, toppled No. 42 Stevens in straight sets, 6-4, 6-4. Sophomore Idunn Hertzberg also snagged her first singles win of the spring with a 6-2, 2-6, 6-4 decision over Yahner from the No. 6 position.
After dropping two singles matches at Nos. 3 and 4, the 49th-ranked Harkins put TCU back on the board with a 6-1, 5-7, 6-4 win over No. 82 Fraser at the No. 2 spot.
Virginia would go on to clinch the match at the No. 5 position, as Vaez defeated Mastromarino by a score of 7-6(5), 4-6, 2-6.
"I thought we had guts today and went after it. We will find ourselves in tight matches throughout the season and we should get better at handling the pressure as we go," Hammond said. "We've got a tough one tomorrow and we are looking forward to getting back on the court."
The Frogs will return to action on Sunday at 12 p.m. CT as they will meet No. 22 William & Mary in Williamsburg.
